It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held April 18–19, 1998, at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.http://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ NFL Draft Locations October 2, 2014 FootballGeography.com October 23, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20150905090250/http://www.footballgeography.com/nfl-draft-sites/ September 5, 2015 dead Salomone Dan NFL Draft headed to Chicago in 2015 http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 June 3, 2015 New York Giants Giants.com October 2, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20150930065327/http://www.giants.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/NFL-Draft-headed-to-Chicago-in-2015/3ac322b1-3b4c-4a16-aba7-6e08d31b1756 September 30, 2015 dead The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. Before the draft, there was much debate in the media on if the Indianapolis Colts would select quarterbacks Peyton Manning from the University of Tennessee's Volunteers or Ryan Leaf from the Washington State University's Cougars with the first overall pick. Both were considered excellent prospects and future franchise quarterbacks: Leaf was considered to have more upside and a stronger throwing arm, whereas Manning was considered a polished prospect who was NFL ready and more mature. On the day of the draft, the Colts selected Manning due to Leaf's disdain for Indianapolis and many other factors, with Leaf being selected second overall by the San Diego Chargers, who traded a king's ransom to the Arizona Cardinals for the right to draft whoever the Colts didn't select with the first overall selection to replace the recently-retired Stan Humphries as their franchise quarterback, which became Leaf, while the Cardinals would take the Chargers' original third overall pick to select the Florida State Seminoles defensive end Andre Wadsworth. Manning went on to be a five-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winnerhttps://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MannPe00.htm Peyton Manning Stats Pro-Football-Reference.com (the most of any player in NFL history), a two-time Super Bowl champion (in 2006 with the Colts and in 2015 with the Denver Broncos), and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021, while Leaf was out of the NFL by 2002 after having earned a 4–17 record over 21 games as a starting quarterback with both the Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys, with brief stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks, and is considered one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history.http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/an-agent-claims-the-colts-wanted-ryan-leaf-over-peyton-manning-but-ryan-leaf-told-them-to-f-off/ Colts Wanted Ryan Leaf Over Peyton Manning In 1998 NFL Draft Sportsgrid.com January 21, 2014 October 18, 2018 April 22, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20160422095208/http://www.sportsgrid.com/nfl/an-agent-claims-the-colts-wanted-ryan-leaf-over-peyton-manning-but-ryan-leaf-told-them-to-f-off/ dead Player selections 7 yes * Compensatory selection † Pro BowlerPlayers are identified as a Pro Bowler if they were selected for the Pro Bowl at any time in their career. ‡ Hall of FamerPlayers are identified as a Hall of Famer if they have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. thumb|Peyton Manning, taken first overall, won two Super Bowls and is considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. thumb|Charles Woodson was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, four-time All-Pro, voted to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 thumb|Randy Moss is considered one of the greatest wide receivers of all time and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018 thumb|Considered one of the best guards ever, Alan Faneca was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, a six-time All-Pro, voted to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2021 thumb|Receiver Hines Ward won two Super Bowls with Pittsburgh, winning the Super Bowl XL MVP award 250pt 1998 1 1 Indianapolis Colts Peyton Manning QB 1997 University of Tennessee Tennessee Volunteers Tennessee yes yes 1997 Maxwell Award winner yes 1998 1 2 yes San Diego Chargers Ryan Leaf QB 1997 Washington State University Washington State Cougars Washington State from ArizonaCardinalsChargersTradeNo. 2: Arizona → San Diego (PD).
