American college football season August 2023 December 2025 1984 San Jose State Spartans football Pacific Coast Athletic Association PCAA 7–4 6–1 Claude Gilbert 1st Spartan Stadium The 1984 San Jose State Spartans football team represented San Jose State University during the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season as a member of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association. The Big West Conference was known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association from its founding in 1969 through 1987. The team was led by head coach Claude Gilbert, in his first year as head coach at San Jose State. He had been their defensive coordinator for the previous three years. They played home games at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, California. The Spartans finished the 1984 season with a record of five wins and six losses (6–5, 5–2 PCAA). After the season was over, it was discovered that the UNLV Rebels had used multiple ineligible players during both the 1983 and 1984 season. As a result, San Jose State's loss at UNLV turns into a forfeit win and their record is adjusted to 7–4, 6–1 PCAA.https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-03-13-sp-22150-story.html UNLV Punished for Using Ineligible Football Players December 22, 2016 Schedule September 1 w New Mexico State Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA 14–0 12,687 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-peninsula-times-tribune-spartans-shu/170166476/ The Peninsula Times Tribune Spartans shut out Aggies September 2, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 8 w y UNLV Sam Boyd Silver Bowl Whitney, NV 15–30 (forfeit win) 21,360 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-peninsula-times-tribune-sjs-defense/170166695/ The Peninsula Times Tribune SJS defense fails the test in 30–15 loss to Las Vegas September 9, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.comMcCurdie Jim UNLV Punished for Using Ineligible Football Players https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1985-03-13-sp-22150-story.html April 12, 2025 The Los Angeles Times March 13, 1985 September 15 l y y Arizona State Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ 0–48 63,271 https://www.newspapers.com/article/santa-cruz-sentinel-spartans-blown-out-b/170140575/ Santa Cruz Sentinel Spartans blown out by Arizona State September 16, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 22 l y y Stanford Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA rivalry 27–28 70,426 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-sacramento-bee-stanford-stops-sparta/170141579/ The Sacramento Bee Stanford stops Spartan streak September 23, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com September 29 w y y California California Memorial Stadium Berkeley, CA 33–18 43,200 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-san-francisco-examiner-spartans-whip/170142289/ The San Francisco Examiner Spartans whip Cal convincingly September 30, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 6 w Utah State Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA 38–21 14,667 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-daily-spectrum-san-jose-tops-usu-in/170166917/ The Daily Spectrum San Jose tops USU in PCAA October 7, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 13 l y Cal State Fullerton Santa Ana Stadium Santa Ana, CA 12–21 9,260 Fullerton Runs Record to 7–0 With 21–12 Win Over San Jose John Weyler The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California October 14, 1984 III-11 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/8889659/fullerton_runs_record_to_70_with_win/ Newspapers.com February 11, 2017 October 20 l y Southwestern Louisiana Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA 28–35 6,023 https://www.newspapers.com/article/daily-world-usl-offense-was-key-in-big-w/170167036/ Daily World USL offense was key in big win October 21, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com October 27 w y Fresno State Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA rivalry 18–17 17,047 http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/gobulldogs.com/documents/2016/7/31/2016_Fresno_State_Football_Media_Guide_FINAL.pdf?id=5374 Fresno State 2016 Media Guide December 8, 2016 December 20, 2016 https://web.archive.org/web/20161220192819/http://sidearm.sites.s3.amazonaws.com/gobulldogs.com/documents/2016/7/31/2016_Fresno_State_Football_Media_Guide_FINAL.pdf?id=5374 deadSouthland Summaries The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California October 28, 1984 III-16 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/9987911/southland_19841028/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 November 10 w Long Beach State Spartan Stadium San Jose, CA 42–7 4,444 San Jose St. 42, Long Beach 7 The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California November 11, 1984 III-18 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/8868885/san_jose_st_42_long_beach_7/ Newspapers.com February 10, 2017 November 17 w y Pacific (CA) Pacific Memorial Stadium Stockton, CA Victory Bell 33–0 1,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-peninsula-times-tribune-sjs-wins-fin/170167174/ The Peninsula Times Tribune SJS wins finale, 33–0 November 18, 1984 April 12, 2025 Newspapers.com https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/san-jose-state/1984-schedule.html San Jose State 1984 Schedule December 16, 2016http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/950acbb8#/950acbb8/1 San Jose State 2016 Football Media Guide December 16, 2016 Team players in the NFL The following were selected in the 1985 NFL draft.https://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1985.htm 1985 NFL Draft January 12, 2017 December 21, 2007 https://web.archive.org/web/20071221193413/http://www.pro-football-reference.com/draft/1985.htm dead Player Position Round Overall NFL team Tony Smith Wide receiver 5 134 New York Jets The following finished their college career in 1984, were not drafted, but played in the NFL.https://www.pro-football-reference.com/schools/sanjosest/ San Jose St. Players/Alumni December 16, 2016 Player Position First NFL team Charles Clinton Defensive back 1987 Houston Oilers Keith McDonald Wide receiver 1987 Houston Oilers Kevin Bowman Wide receiver 1987 Philadelphia Eagles Notes 2 note References San Jose State Category:San Jose State Spartans football seasons San Jose State Spartans football
