Background This was not the first instance of the Strikers playing indoors. Their first ever match, indoor or out, was an exhibition match played on February 27, 1977, versus their arch-rival, Tampa Bay Rowdies at the Bayfront Center. In January 1978 they played the Washington Diplomats indoors at the D.C. Armory on back-to-back days. The Strikers lost all of three of these matches. Review In January 1979 four NASL teams participated in the Budweiser Indoor Soccer Invitational at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Florida. The teams were the Dallas Tornado, Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, Tulsa Roughnecks, and the host, Tampa Bay Rowdies. The event was held over two days.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=rsEwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=3VgDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6654,3317860&dq=rowdies+had+to+do+more&hl=en The Evening Independent - Google News Archive Search The Strikers finished the tournament in fourth place. The team wore a very basic, green and white, adidas uniform for the invitational. It was very similar to the away kit that the West German national team wore during that era, except that the Strikers's numbers on the backs were red and there was no team crest of any kind on the front of the jerseys.2013 NASL strikersNASL 2013 Rowdies Competitions NASL indoor regular season Budweiser Indoor Soccer Invitational 1979 Budweiser Indoor Soccer Invitational TeamLeagueRecordStandingsGFGAGDDallas Tornado*NASL2–01st place159+6Tampa Bay RowdiesNASL2–02nd place (runners-up)94+5Tulsa RoughnecksNASL0–23rd place711-4Fort Lauderdale StrikersNASL0–24th place613-7 * Dallas wins title on goal differential Results summaries Session 1: January 27, 1979 7:00 PM ESTDallas Tornado8–7Tulsa Roughnecks Attendance: 6,342 8:30 PM ESTTampa Bay Rowdies6–4Fort Lauderdale Strikers Session 2: January 28, 1979Rowdies Defeat Strikers January 28, 1979 Lakeland Ledger Google News Archive Search https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=omxNAAAAIBAJ&sjid=rfoDAAAAIBAJ&pg=3687,8311225&dq=rowdies+defeat+strikers&hl=en 1C October 24, 2016 6:00 PM ESTDallas Tornado7–2Fort Lauderdale Strikers Attendance: 6,338 7:30 PM ESTTampa Bay Rowdies3–0Tulsa Roughnecks Match reports 1 January 27, 1979 8:30 PM Tampa Bay Rowdies 6–4 Report 1Report 2 Fort Lauderdale Strikers Marsh 9:16Mirandinha 11:50 McLeodMirandinha 20:44 Maurer Maurer 26:38 MarshWegerle 27:43 MarshQuraishi 28:25 Mirandinha Njie 20:33 WiggemansenGemeri 24:37Njie 30:21 WiggemansenVaninger 34:13 Bayfront Center St. Petersburg, Florida 6,342 L 2 January 28, 1979 6:00 PM Dallas Tornado 7–2 Report on p. 2-C Fort Lauderdale Strikers Ryan 9:38 Haaskivi Collins 16:28 HaaskiviHaaskivi 23:58 PecherRyan 28:54 HaaskiviRyan 38:07 WaddellHaaskivi 41:04Ryan 43:36 Wiggemansen 14:36 Jones, Gemeri 21:01 Hudson Bayfront Center St. Petersburg, Florida 6,338 L Strikers' indoor matches prior to 1979 1 February 27, 1977 8:00 p.m. (EST) Tampa Bay Rowdies 9–8 Report Fort Lauderdale Strikers Lindsay 4:21 WegerleSmethurst 33:13Smethurst 34:04 AlstonQuraishi 41:34 SmethurstSmethurst 41:57 WegerleWegerle 48:29Smethurst 49:30 WegerleWegerle 50:41Alston 51:47 Smethurst Mulroy 12:07 Nanchoff, SharpSharp 12:27Nanchoff 26:40 ChadwickCeballos 44:20 SharpChadwick 47:40 Hamlyn, SharpSharp 50:41Sharp 58:04Hamlyn 59:57 Bayfront Center St. Petersburg, Florida 5,016 Sam Hornich L 2 January 7, 1978 8:00 p.m. (EST) Washington Diplomats 9–2 Report Fort Lauderdale Strikers Fearnley 14:01 NanchoffProctor Bodonczy D.C.
