The series ran from November 2001 to May 2002. New Zealand was the series champion for a third consecutive year, and won seven of the eleven tournaments. No other country won more than one tournament during the season. South Africa and England won their first tournaments on the world circuit and finished in second and third place on the final series standings, respectively. 3 Calendar Twelve tournaments were originally scheduled for the 2001–02 series but, after several teams withdrew from 2001 Dubai Sevens in the wake of the September 11 attacks that year, the tournament was downgraded in status and excluded from the official series standings. 24 October 2001 England to miss Dubai's downgraded sevens Ian Malin The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2001/oct/23/rugbyunion.ianmalin https://web.archive.org/web/20160814042406/https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2001/oct/23/rugbyunion.ianmalin 14 August 2016 16 October 2001 Dubai scrubbed from Sevens Series Irish Times http://www.irishtimes.com/news/dubai-scrubbed-from-sevens-series-1.400377 https://web.archive.org/web/20160611140425/http://www.irishtimes.com/news/dubai-scrubbed-from-sevens-series-1.400377 11 June 2016 + 2001–02 Itineraryhttp://www.irb.com/irbsevens/archive/tcode=10100/season=2001/overview.html IRB Sevens World Series 2001/02 en irb.com May 17, 2016 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20090220202226/http://www.irb.com/irbsevens/archive/tcode%3D10100/season%3D2001/overview.html February 20, 2009 .
