Netherlands Minke Docter (9) 1994 2002 The 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup was the first world cup fully sanctioned by the International Rugby Board (IRB) and the third Women's Rugby World Cup in history. The tournament took place in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands and was the first women's world cup held outside of the United Kingdom. The tournament saw a record 16 teams compete and heightened media attention. There was no qualification process, teams taking part by invitation from the IRB. New Zealand defeated the United States 44–12 in the final. Several matches in the tournament were filmed for television and a one-hour TV highlights programme was produced by IMG. These recordings are held as part of the IRB's World Cup Archive.http://www.imgmediaarchive.com/home/browse/event/store127/item1548/ World Cup Archive dead https://web.archive.org/web/20070601054801/http://www.imgmediaarchive.com/home/browse/event/store127/item1548/ 1 June 2007 Squads 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup squads Pool stages Pool A main WDL Ladder n points none ENG ENG CAN CAN NED NED SWE SWE 2 0 0 147 6 1 0 1 22 79 1 0 1 51 16 0 0 2 0 119 inherit 2nd 2ND inherit 8th 8TH inherit 10th 10TH inherit 15th 15TH complete 1 May 1998 NED 7–16 CAN Amsterdam 2 May 1998 ENG 75–0 SWE Amsterdam 5 May 1998 CAN 6–72 ENG Amsterdam 5 May 1998 NED 44–0 SWE Amsterdam Pool B main WDL Ladder n points none USA USA ESP ESP WAL WAL RUS RUS 2 0 0 122 16 1 0 1 44 56 1 0 1 101 35 0 0 2 7 167 inherit 3rd 3RD inherit 6th 6TH inherit 9th 9TH inherit 16th 16TH complete 2 May 1998 ESP 28–18 WAL Amsterdam 2 May 1998 RUS 0–84 USA Amsterdam 5 May 1998 ESP 16–38 USA Amsterdam 5 May 1998 RUS 7–83 WAL Amsterdam Pool C main WDL Ladder n points none NZL NZL SCO SCO ITA ITA GER GER 2 0 0 210 6 1 0 1 37 84 1 0 1 42 42 0 0 2 11 168 inherit 1st 1ST inherit 7th 7TH inherit 11th 11TH inherit 14th 14TH complete 2 May 1998 GER 6–134 NZL Amsterdam 2 May 1998 ITA 8–37 SCO Amsterdam 5 May 1998 NZL 76–0 SCO Amsterdam 5 May 1998 GER 5–34 ITA Amsterdam Pool D main WDL Ladder n points none FRA FRA AUS AUS KAZ KAZ IRE IRE 2 0 0 33 14 1 0 1 29 10 1 0 1 18 29 0 0 2 6 33 inherit 4th 4TH inherit 5th 5TH inherit 12th 12TH inherit 13th 13TH complete 2 May 1998 FRA 23–6 KAZ Amsterdam 2 May 1998 AUS 21–0 IRE Amsterdam 5 May 1998 AUS 8–10 FRA Amsterdam 5 May 1998 IRE 6–12 KAZ Amsterdam Bowl 9 May – Amsterdam NED 18 IRE 21 9 May – Amsterdam ITA 51 RUS 7 9 May – Amsterdam KAZ 47 SWE 5 9 May – Amsterdam WAL 55 GER 12 12 May – Amsterdam IRE 20 ITA 5 12 May – Amsterdam KAZ 18 WAL 13 15 May – Amsterdam IRE 10 KAZ 26 15 May – Amsterdam ITA 10 WAL 12 Quarter-finals 9 May 1998 NED 18–21 IRE Amsterdam 9 May 1998 GER 12–55 WAL Amsterdam 9 May 1998 KAZ 47–5 SWE Amsterdam 9 May 1998 ITA 51–7 RUS Amsterdam Semi-finals 12 May 1998 IRE 20–5 ITA Amsterdam 12 May 1998 KAZ 18–13 WAL Amsterdam 11th/12th place 15 May 1998 ITA 10–12 WAL Amsterdam Final (9th place) 15 May 1998 IRE 10–26 KAZ Amsterdam Shield 12 May – Amsterdam NED 61 RUS 0 12 May – Amsterdam SWE 18 GER 20 15 May – Amsterdam NED 67 GER 3 15 May – Amsterdam RUS 3 SWE 23 Semi-finals 12 May 1998 NED 61–0 RUS Amsterdam 12 May 1998 GER 20–18 SWE Amsterdam 15th/16th place 15 May 1998 RUS 3–23 SWE Amsterdam Final (13th place) 15 May 1998 NED 67–3 GER Amsterdam Cup 9 May – Amsterdam ENG 30 AUS 13 9 May – Amsterdam NZL 46 ESP 3 9 May – Amsterdam FRA 7 CAN 9 9 May – Amsterdam USA 25 SCO 10 12 May – Amsterdam ENG 11 NZL 44 12 May – Amsterdam CAN 6 USA 46 15 May – Amsterdam NZL 44 USA 12 15 May – Amsterdam ENG 31 CAN 15 Quarter-finals 9 May 1998 AUS 13–30 ENG Amsterdam 9 May 1998 SCO 10–25 USA Amsterdam 9 May 1998 CAN 9–7 FRA Amsterdam 9 May 1998 NZL 46–3 ESP Amsterdam Semi-finals 12 May 1998 ENG 11–44 NZL Amsterdam 12 May 1998 CAN 6–46 USA Amsterdam 3rd/4th place 16 May 1998 CAN 15–31 ENG Amsterdam Final 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup final 16 May 1998 NZL 44–12 USA Amsterdam Plate 12 May – Amsterdam AUS 17 ESP 15 12 May – Amsterdam FRA 7 SCO 27 15 May – Amsterdam AUS 25 SCO 15 15 May – Amsterdam ESP 22 FRA 9 Semi-finals 12 May 1998 AUS 17–15 ESP Amsterdam 12 May 1998 FRA 7–27 SCO Amsterdam 7th/8th place 16 May 1998 FRA 9–22 ESP Amsterdam Final (5th place) 16 May 1998 AUS 25–15 SCO Amsterdam ruw 1998 Women's Rugby World Cup winners New Zealand First 1998 Top scorers Pos.NameTeamTriesConvPenPoints1Annaleah RushNZL5212732Anne-Mieke van WaverenNetherlands6133653Jos BergmanUSA388554Tracey ComleyWales4151535Tammi WilsonNZL780516Minke DocterNetherlands900457Nicky BrownEngland800408Realtine ShrievesIreland0211389Louisa WallNZL700359Vanessa CootesNZL7003511Alfiya TamayevaKazakhstan111233 Notes note Sources Rugby World Cup Women’s Stats Archivehttps://scrumhalfconnection.com/rugby-world-cup-womens-stats-archive/ https://web.archive.org/web/20250619142825/https://scrumhalfconnection.com/rugby-world-cup-womens-stats-archive/ Rugby World Cup Women's Stats Archive 19 June 2025 live Women's Rugby Data https://womensrugbydata.com/womens-rugby-world-cup-1998/ Women's Rugby World Cup 1998 See also Women's Rugby World Cup Rugby World Cup Sevens Rugby World Cup References External links IRB coverage (via WebArchive) WRWC 1998 in Amsterdam Previous World Cup rugby results 1998 Category:1998 rugby union tournaments for national teams Rug Category:International rugby union competitions hosted by the Netherlands Category:1998 in women's rugby union Category:May 1998 sports events in Europe Category:1990s in Amsterdam Women's Rugby World Cup, 1998 Category:Women's sports competitions in the Netherlands Category:Women's rugby union in the Netherlands Category:Women's sport in Amsterdam
