Held from 31 May to 21 June in Mexico, it was the first World Cup tournament held outside Europe and South America, and also the first hosted in North America. Teams representing 75 nations from all six populated continents entered the competition, and its qualification rounds began in May 1968. Fourteen teams qualified from this process to join host nation Mexico and defending champions England in the 16-team final tournament. El Salvador, Israel and Morocco made their debut appearances at the final stage. In the tournament final, Brazil won 4–1 against Italy, another FIFA two-time champion (and UEFA Euro 1968 winner). Brazil also overcame another two-time champion and South American champions Uruguay, by 3–1 in the semi-final, and defending champions England 1–0 in the group stage as they were also eliminated by West Germany in the quarter-finals. This is currently the only time that the winning team defeated the European and South American champions alongside the tournament's defending champions. The win gave Brazil their third World Cup title, which allowed them to permanently keep the Jules Rimet Trophy, and a new trophy was introduced in 1974. The victorious team, led by Carlos Alberto and featuring players such as Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho, Rivellino and Tostão, is often cited as the greatest football team of all time. The Story of the 1970 World Cup https://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jonathanstevenson/2010/05/the_story_of_the_1970_world_cu.html BBC 12 May 2010 19 December 2019 17 October 2018 https://web.archive.org/web/20181017155256/http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/jonathanstevenson/2010/05/the_story_of_the_1970_world_cu.html live https://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-world-best-idUSL0988846220070709 Reuters Brazil's 1970 winning team voted best of all time 9 July 2007 24 September 2015 5 July 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20150924121245/http://www.reuters.com/article/2007/07/09/us-soccer-world-best-idUSL0988846220070709 live https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/the-boys-from-brazil-on-the-trail-of-footballs-dream-team-806939.html The Independent The Boys from Brazil: On the trail of football's dream team 10 April 2010 19 September 2017 2 April 2019 https://web.archive.org/web/20190402182149/https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/international/the-boys-from-brazil-on-the-trail-of-footballs-dream-team-806939.html dead They achieved a perfect record of wins in all six games in the finals, as well as winning all their qualifying fixtures.http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/67/world-cup/2010/07/07/2013961/world-cup-2010-netherlands-perfect-winning-streak-can-match Goal.com Netherlands' perfect winning streak can match historic feat of Brazil 1970 7 July 2010 7 July 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20140309024534/http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/67/world-cup/2010/07/07/2013961/world-cup-2010-netherlands-perfect-winning-streak-can-match 9 March 2014 live Despite the issues of altitude and high temperature,https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0qBWAAAAIBAJ&pg=4552%2C3687609 Free-Lance Star Fredericksburg, VA Associated Press Soccer play in Mexico stirs altitude controversy 2 June 1970 6 1 May 2021 7 November 2020 https://web.archive.org/web/20210501112214/https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=0qBWAAAAIBAJ&pg=4552,3687609 live the finals largely produced attacking football which created an average goals per game record not since bettered by any subsequent World Cup Finals.Castrol index tournament legends http://www.castrolfootball.com/legends/tournament/index.php?year=1970 Castrol Performance Index 7 July 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20130617010759/http://www.castrolfootball.com/legends/tournament/index.php?year=1970 17 June 2013 livePerfect farewell to Pelé's last appearance in a World Cup http://www.copa2014.gov.br/en/torcedor/historia-das-copas/1970 Brasil 2014: World Cup Portal 7 July 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20131114193817/http://www.copa2014.gov.br/en/torcedor/historia-das-copas/1970 14 November 2013 deadWorld Championship – Jules Rimet 1970 Cup Technical study https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/technicaldevp/50/09/67/wc_70_tr_313.pdf dead FIFA https://web.archive.org/web/20100106062034/http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/afdeveloping/technicaldevp/50/09/67/wc%5f70%5ftr%5f313.pdf 6 January 2010 With the advancements in satellite communications, the 1970 Finals attracted a new record television audience for the FIFA World Cup as games were broadcast live around the worldDunmore Tom Historical Dictionary of Soccer Scarecrow Press 2011 13 and, in a few cases, in colour—the first time that that was the case.1970 FIFA World Cup Mexico https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/edition=32/overview.html dead FIFA https://web.archive.org/web/20080913232659/http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/edition%3D32/overview.html 13 September 2008http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/about/media-centre/news/40-years-since-first-world-cup-in-colour-NEWS27/ TVlicensing.co.uk 40 years since first World Cup in colour 8 July 2013 13 January 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20140113085013/http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/about/media-centre/news/40-years-since-first-world-cup-in-colour-NEWS27/ live Host selection FIFA World Cup hosts Mexico was chosen as the host nation on 8 October 1964 vote at the FIFA congress in Tokyo, where the only other bid submitted was by Argentina, which would go on to host the 1978 World Cup.Host Announcement Decision https://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/mencompwc/51/97/81/fs-201_13a_fwc-bidding.pdf https://web.archive.org/web/20120722021820/http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/fifafacts/mencompwc/51/97/81/fs-201%5f13a%5ffwc-bidding.pdf dead 22 July 2012 FIFA 2 December 2010 The 1970 selection of Mexico as host would mark several distinctions. The 16 qualified teams were divided into four groups of four. Each group was played as a single round-robin in which each team would play each of the others in their group once. Teams were ranked by the number of points earned from their matches (two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw), and goal difference was used as the primary tie-breaker; if two teams finished level on both points and goal difference, lots were drawn to separate them.
