Electoral system A new electoral law was passed prior to the election, replacing the system in which 120 members of the Assembly were elected in single-member constituencies, with one in which 35 were elected by proportional representation at the national level, and 85 elected in single member constituencies.Nohlen & Stöver, p1274 In the single-member constituencies, candidates had to receive 50% of votes cast and 33% of the total number of registered voters to win in the first round. If no candidate achieved this requirement, a second round was held between the two candidates with the most votes. This was the only election to use this system.Nohlen & Stöver, p1275 Prior to the 2002 elections it was replaced by a system in which the country was divided into six constituencies that elected 20 members each by proportional representation.Nohlen & Stöver, p1276 Results File:Macedonia Assembly 1998.svg Proportional Constituency (first round) Constituency (second round) VMRO-DPMNE 312669 11 6927 0 8195 0 11 Social Democratic Union of Macedonia 279799 10 278766 4 273193 13 27 PPD–DPA 214360 8 8 Democratic Alternative 119352 4 6907 0 4 LDP–DPM 77788 2 116190 0 34766 2 4 SPM–PCERM–DPT–DPPRM–SDAM 52284 0 10962 0 3679 0 0 Democratic Party of Serbs in Macedonia 14930 0 0 VMRO-DOM 11577 0 3167 0 0 Party of Pensioners 5970 0 277 0 0 MAAK-KP–MA–DP 5596 0 8376 0 0 VMRO-DP mk Внатрешна македонска револуционерна организација - Демократска партија 3746 0 9050 0 0 Civil-Liberal Party of Macedonia 3393 0 430 0 0 League of Communists of Macedonia 2756 0 2997 0 0 Socialist Christian Party of Macedonia 2186 0 1120 0 0 Communist Party of Macedonia 2058 0 1828 0 0 Workers Party 1528 0 818 0 0 VMRO-DPMNE–Democratic Alternative 369615 6 373001 41 47 Party for Democratic Prosperity 132430 9 18153 1 10 Socialist Party of Macedonia 60542 1 12534 0 1 Democratic Party of Albanians 53469 3 28361 4 7 Union of Roma in Macedonia 3577 0 7294 1 1 SDSM–SDPM 9411 0 0 Party for Democratic Action – True Path 5744 0 4744 0 0 Democratic Party of Turks 3933 0 0 VMRO-DPMNE–DA–League for Democracy mk Лига за демократија 3615 0 4695 0 0 PDP–NDP 1653 0 0 Republican Party of People's Unity 1338 0 0 SPM–PCERM–DPT–DPPRM 813 0 0 Democratic Progressive Party of the Roma from Macedonia 426 0 0 Democratic Party 347 0 0 MAAK – Conservative Party 196 0 0 Social Democratic Party of Macedonia 142 0 0 SPM–DPT–SDAM 84 0 0 Independents 2762 0 11398 0 5128 0 0 33755 27946 14481 0 1572976 1572976 1142926 Slavic Research Centre, Sobranie References External links OCSE reports Official results mk Category:Elections in North Macedonia Macedonia Category:1998 in the Republic of Macedonia Macedonia
