Rather, teams are placed into one of three tiers. Teams in the upper tier are spread around the bracket as best as possible, although not every upper tier team receives a first round bye. Lower tier and middle tier teams tend to meet in the first round, while upper tier teams will usually play winners of first-round games in the second round. The organizers attempt to bracket the first two rounds based on geography. The location of games is determined in part by seed, but also by facility availability and other factors.2009 Postseason Bracket (PDF) - WNIT Pre and Post Tournament https://womensnit.com/documents/2019/3/4/09_post_bracket.pdf?id=27 2021-04-24 womensnit.com en Participants Sections Section 1SchoolConferenceRecordBerth typeOregon StatePac-1019–11AutomaticNebraskaBig 1215–15At-LargeArkansasSEC17–13AutomaticKansasBig 1218–13AutomaticPortlandWCC17–13AutomaticPortland StateBig Sky22–9AutomaticSouthernSWAC16–13AutomaticNew MexicoMWC22–10AutomaticTexas-ArlingtonSouthland22–10AutomaticOklahoma StateBig 1216–15At-LargeUC RiversideBig West19–11AutomaticCreightonMVC21–11At-Large Section 2SchoolConferenceRecordBerth typeMarquetteBig East16–15At-LargeIllinois StateMVC24–7AutomaticIndianaBig Ten19–10AutomaticBowling GreenMAC28–4AutomaticButlerHorizon19–11AutomaticDuquesneA-1020–11At-LargeSouthern MethodistC-USA20–11AutomaticLouisiana TechWAC20–12AutomaticDaytonA-1020–13At-LargeOaklandSummit26–6AutomaticCanisiusMAAC24–8AutomaticSyracuseBig East16–14At-Large Section 3SchoolConferenceRecordBerth typeBoston CollegeACC20–11AutomaticHartfordAmerica East20–11At-LargeWake ForestACC19–11At-LargeRichmondA-1023–9AutomaticCentral ConnecticutNortheast18–13AutomaticBostonAmerica East24–7AutomaticHarvardIvy League19–9AutomaticSt. John'sBig East17–14At-LargeWinthropBig South16–15AutomaticGeorgetownBig East17–13At-LargeAmericanPatriot19–11AutomaticJames MadisonCAA23–9Automatic Section 4SchoolConferenceRecordBerth typeSt. BonaventureA-1021–10At-LargeWisconsinBig Ten18–14At-LargeSouth FloridaBig East22–10AutomaticMississippiSEC17–14At-LargeCoppin StateMEAC14–14AutomaticWest VirginiaBig East17–14At-LargeChattanoogaSoCon22–9AutomaticKentuckySEC15–15At-LargeGeorge WashingtonA-1017–13At-LargeFlorida Gulf CoastA-Sun25–4AutomaticMurray StateOVC22–8AutomaticArkansas-Little RockSun Belt26–6Automatic Final Four Kansas took on Illinois State in the first semifinal, held at Allen Fieldhouse.
