Nadal also became the first man to win the Surface Slam (majors on clay, grass, and hard courts in the same calendar year). Nadal was also the youngest man to complete the Career Grand Slam at just 1986 6 3 2010 9 13 old. His compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz, would break his record at the 2026 Australian Open at 2003 5 5 2026 2 1 old. Juan Martín del Potro was the reigning champion, but did not participate this year after undergoing a wrist operation in May and only starting to practice again in August. Del Potro thus became the third man in the Open Era not to attempt to defend the US Open title, after Ken Rosewall in 1971 and Pete Sampras in 2003.del Potro Unable To Defend US Open Crown 2010-08-21 http://www.atpworldtour.com/News/Tennis/2010/08/Other/US-Open-del-Potro-Withdraws.aspx atpworldtour.com 2010-08-28Wrist knocks out Juan Martin del Potro 2010-08-21 https://www.espn.com/sports/tennis/usopen10/news/story?id=5481812 ESPN.com 2010-08-23 For the first time in tournament history, no American man was seeded in the top eight.
