It was the fifth instalment of the Canada Cup since its inception in 1976. The finals took place in Montreal on September 14 and Hamilton on September 16, and were won by Canada. The Canadians defeated the United States in a two-game sweep, to secure their fourth Canada Cup championship. The tournament was replaced by the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. Of the five Canada Cup tournaments, this is the only one in which a team went undefeated; Canada compiled a record of six wins and two ties in eight games. The first tie was a stunning 2–2 result with underdog Finland on the opening day of the tournament, who got spectacular goaltending from Markus Ketterer.May 2011 April 2025 Finland surprised many by finishing in third place in the round robin; the first time they had ever qualified for the semi-finals in the history of the Canada Cup. The Americans were also very strong, as they iced their best international line-up to date.May 2011 April 2025 They went a perfect 5–0 against European competition in the tournament while losing three times to Canada. The team representing the USSR was relatively weak compared to past tournaments. It did not have many of its top stars due to severe political turmoil at home, with many players declining to play for the team or purposely left off the roster (such as Pavel Bure and Vladimir Konstantinov) for fears of defection. https://www.espn.com/olympics/winter02/hockey/story?id=1326249 Russians regroup on other side of the red line? ESPN 2002-02-14 It was not known until weeks before the start of the tournament that they would even send a team. This was the final major senior event in which a team representing the USSR would play. Game 1 of the final is best remembered for the check on Wayne Gretzky by American defenseman Gary Suter, which knocked the Canadian captain out of the tournament and forced him to miss the first month of the NHL season.https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/suters-career-accomplishments-overshadowed-by-two-checks/article1336565/ The Globe and Mail https://web.archive.org/web/20260417084152/https://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/suters-career-accomplishments-overshadowed-by-two-checks/article1336565/ April 17, 2026 Suter's career accomplishments overshadowed by two checks Eric Duhatschek September 12, 2002 Game 2 was tied until late in the third period when Steve Larmer scored the tournament winner on a short-handed breakaway.https://www.nhl.com/gamecenter/can-vs-usa/1991/09/16/1991140019 NHL.com April 17, 2026 Canada - USA - September 16, 1991 NHL.com Rosters See 1991 Canada Cup rosters Standings main WDL Q n 2 CAN CAN USA USA FIN FIN SWE SWE URS URS TCH TCH 3 2 0 21 11 4 0 1 19 15 2 1 2 10 13 2 0 3 13 17 1 1 3 14 14 1 0 4 11 18 #cfc Advanced to semifinals A A A A complete Results Round-robin #eeeeee August 31, 1991 CAN 2–2 FIN #eeffff August 31, 1991 USA 6–3 SWE #eeeeee August 31, 1991 TCH 5–2 URS #eeffff September 2, 1991 CAN 6–3 USA #eeeeee September 2, 1991 SWE 3–2 URS #eeffff September 2, 1991 FIN 1–0 TCH #eeeeee September 5, 1991 CAN 4–1 SWE #eeffff September 5, 1991 USA 4–2 TCH #eeeeee September 5, 1991 URS 6–1 FIN #eeffff September 7, 1991 CAN 6–2 TCH #eeeeee September 7, 1991 USA 2–1 URS #eeffff September 7, 1991 FIN 3–1 SWE #eeeeee September 9, 1991 CAN 3–3 URS #eeffff September 9, 1991 USA 4–3 FIN #eeeeee September 9, 1991 SWE 5–2 TCH Playoff round Semi-finals #eeeeee September 11, 1991 USA 7–3 FIN #eeffff September 12, 1991 CAN 4–0 SWE Final (best of three) #eeeeee September 14, 1991 CAN 4–1 USA #eeffff September 16, 1991 CAN 4–2 USA Leading scorers Player Team GP G A Pts PIMWayne GretzkyCanada748122Steve LarmerCanada865114Brett HullUnited States82790Mike ModanoUnited States82792Mark MessierCanada826810Paul CoffeyCanada81678Craig JanneyUnited States84264Jeremy RoenickUnited States84264Mats SundinSweden624616Al MacInnisCanada824623 Top Goalie: Bill Ranford, Canada (1.75 GAA) Trophies and awards Tournament champion Canada Tournament MVP Bill Ranford, Canada,https://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/thestar/access/466010821.html?FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Sep+17%2C+1991&author=STAFF&pub=Toronto+Star&desc=Ranford+gives+net+results+and+earns+MVP+honors&pqatl=google https://archive.today/20130131171945/http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/thestar/access/466010821.html?FMT=ABS&FMTS=ABS:FT&type=current&date=Sep+17,+1991&author=STAFF&pub=Toronto+Star&desc=Ranford+gives+net+results+and+earns+MVP+honors&pqatl=google dead January 31, 2013 Ranford gives net results and earns MVP honors pqasb.pqarchiver.comhttp://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/33460-.html Backchecking: Ranford caps off a dynasty thehockeynews.com 2010-05-09 2012-08-12 https://web.archive.org/web/20150604011101/http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/33460-.html 2015-06-04 dead All-star team Goaltender: Bill Ranford, Canada Defence: Al MacInnis, Canada; Chris Chelios, USA Forwards: Wayne Gretzky, Canada; Mats Sundin, Sweden; Jeremy Roenick, USA Notes External links Team USA Roster, Stats Tournament Summary Hockey Archive 1991 Category:1991–92 in Canadian ice hockey Category:1991–92 in American ice hockey Category:1991–92 in Soviet ice hockey Category:1991–92 in Czechoslovak ice hockey Category:1991–92 in Finnish ice hockey Category:1991–92 in Swedish ice hockey Category:August 1991 sports events in Canada Category:September 1991 sports events in Canada Category:August 1991 sports events in the United States Category:September 1991 sports events in the United States
