However, it mostly became known for an infamous brawl during Game 2 that saw eleven ejections, a coach suspended the rest of the series, and criminal matters. The incident began when Calgary's Rick Jodzio cross-checked Quebec's Marc Tardif in the head, causing both teams to leave their benches.Cowboys-Nordiques playoff brawl part of hockey history Todd Saelhof February 5, 2019 https://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/cowboys-nordiques-playoff-brawl-part-of-hockey-history Calgary Sun https://web.archive.org/web/20210506170347/https://calgarysun.com/sports/hockey/cowboys-nordiques-playoff-brawl-part-of-hockey-history May 6, 2021Bilych George Cowboys, Nordiques brawl gives hockey a black eye Calgary Herald 1976-04-12 1 The brawl lasted 20 minutes, and ended only when Quebec police gathered at the players benches and escorted the teams back to their dressing rooms.Willes Ed 2004 The Rebel League McClelland & Stewart 0-7710-8947-3 registration https://archive.org/details/rebelleagueshort0000will 167-168 The game resumed following a 20-minute break to allow both teams to cool down, then resumed without eleven players who were ejected from the game. The incident caught the attention of Quebec's Solicitor General Fernand Lalonde, who had the incident investigated as a criminal matter. Tardif had a concussion and didn't play for the rest of the series while the team publicly stated their desire to boycott the rest of the series unless their demands were met: the lifetime suspension of Jodzio, a suspension for Calgary head coach Joe Crozier (who reportedly told Jodzio to "get" Tardif) and the firing of WHA vice-president of hockey operations Bud Poile (who the team felt had a bias against them). Jodzio was suspended indefinitely by the league and later pleaded guilty in a Quebec court to a charge of assault over the incident. Crozier was suspended for the rest of the series and Poile resigned in the wake of the suspensions.https://www.nytimes.com/1976/04/13/archives/nordiques-threaten-to-quit-playoff-nordiques-threaten-to-quit.html Nordiques Threaten to Quit Playoff The New York Times April 13, 1976 UPI Both teams were fined $25,000 while Quebec coach Jean-Guy Gendron was suspended for Game 3 (having stepped on the ice to challenge Crozier to a fight).https://newspaperarchive.com/brandon-sun-apr-15-1976-p-6/ Nordiques are winners - off the ice Brandon Sun April 15, 1976 July 22, 2025 The Canadian Press As for the hockey after the brawl, Calgary scored a litany of goals to win Game 2 before Calgary and Quebec then had close victories, but Calgary pulled away with the go-ahead goal in Game 5 by Danny Lawson with five minutes remaining to pull ahead and eliminate Quebec. #f0f0f0 April 10 Calgary Cowboys Quebec Nordiques 3–1 (1–0, 1–0, 1–1) Box score Don McLeod Richard Brodeur 16:05 (1st) – Chris Evans9:26 (2nd) – Ron Chipperfield17:59 (3rd) – Chris Evans 2:40 (3rd) – Real Cloutier Colisée de Québec 10,997 24(9–5–10) 28(10–7–11) #d0d0d0 April 11 Calgary Cowboys Quebec Nordiques 8–4 (2–2, 0–2, 6–0) Box score Don McLeod Richard Brodeur 12:12 (1st) – George Morrison17:51 (1st) – Don Tannahill3:27 (3rd) – George Morrison6:56 (3rd) – Gavin Kirk9:24 (3rd) – Bernie Lukowich10:16 (3rd) – Ron Chipperfield15:35 (3rd) – Gavin Kirk17:31 (3rd) – Lynn Powis 3:43 (1st) – Marc Tardif15:10 (1st) – Serge Bernier2:10 (2nd) – Bob Fitchner10:28 (2nd) – Serge Bernier Colisée de Québec 9,567 29(8–8–13) 25(8–8–9) #f0f0f0 April 14 Quebec Nordiques Calgary Cowboys 2–3 (0–1, 1–1, 1–1) Box score Don McLeod Richard Brodeur 6:49 (2nd) – Real Cloutier19:05 (3rd) – Dale Hoganson 1:06 (1st) – Lynn Powis6:14 (2nd) – Lynn Powis6:15 (3rd) – Bernie Lukowich Stampede Corral 7,201 20(5–8–7) 27(14–9–4) #d0d0d0 April 16 Quebec Nordiques Calgary Cowboys 4–3 (0–1, 4–0, 0–2) Box score Don McLeod Richard Brodeur 10:06 (2nd) – Real Cloutier11:13 (2nd) – Rejean Houle18:40 (2nd) – Real Cloutier19:14 (2nd) – Rejean Houle 13:27 (1st) – Ron Chipperfield8:26 (3rd) – Gavin Kirk12:27 (3rd) – Danny Lawson Stampede Corral 7,945 25(8–12–5) 29(8–9–12) #f0f0f0 April 18 Calgary Cowboys Quebec Nordiques 6–4 (2–0, 1–3, 3–1) Box score Don McLeod Richard Brodeur 4:57 (1st) – Peter Driscoll19:59 (1st) – George Morrison2:49 (2nd) – Chris Evans3:13 (3rd) – Bernie Lukowich14:53 (3rd) – Danny Lawson19:56 (3rd) – Chris Evans 4:36 (2nd) – Christian Bordeleau5:26 (2nd) – Pierre Roy18:12 (2nd) – Steve Sutherland 8:38 (3rd) – Steve Sutherland Colisée de Québec 12,675 28(11–6–11) 41(13–15–13) (E3) New England Whalers vs. (E1) Indianapolis Racers Indianapolis had gone 7–2–3 against New England in the regular season.https://www.hockey-reference.com/playoffs/1976-indianapolis-racers-vs-new-england-whalers-quarter-finals.html 1976 WHA Quarter-Finals: INR vs. NEW Hockey Reference July 22, 2025 In a stunning upset that saw four shutouts, the New England Whalers won three of the first four games before Indianapolis won two straight to force a Game 7. Game 2 saw 15,256 reported fans and saw Bobby Hull score to break the 4-4 tie with 1:54 remaining. The Jets then rode a four-goal first period in Game 3 to win and set up the potential to clinch in Game 4. 10,386 people attended the game at Winnipeg Arena, the largest capacity to see a game all season. The Jets scored first on a goal by Bobby Hull five minutes into the game. Ted Taylor evened the score with his goal four minutes later, but Veli-Pekka Ketola broke the tie 37 seconds later with what ended up as the series-winning goal at 10:22 in the first period. The Jets scored another goal a minute later by Lyle Moffat to give them a 3–1 lead in the first period. It was the first championship for Hull since 1961, when he had won the Stanley Cup in his fourth year as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks, which coincidentally had faced Gordie Howe, then captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Defenseman Ted Green, who won the inaugural Avco World Trophy with New England in the 1973 WHA playoffs, became the first player to win the Trophy with multiple teams. Ulf Nilsson was named WHA Playoff MVP, having scored seven goals and nineteen assists for 26 points during the postseason. For the city, it was the first championship since the 50th Grey Cup victory by the CFL Blue Bombers in 1962.https://newspaperarchive.com/winnipeg-free-press-may-28-1976-p-61/ Champagne shower for Winnipeg's champs Reyn Davis Winnipeg Free Press May 28, 1976 July 22, 2025 A parade and banquet were announced for the city following their championship.https://www.surgent.net/wha/finals/1976finals.html The Complete World Hockey Association - 1976 AVCO Cup Championship Finals https://newspaperarchive.com/the-mountain-statesman-may-28-1976-p-6/ Associated Press Winnipeg wins WHA crown, 9-1 The Mountain Statesman July 22, 2025 May 28, 1976https://newspaperarchive.com/barstow-desert-dispatch-may-28-1976-p-5/ UPI Barstow Desert Dispatch Winnipeg Finishes Houston Off 9-1 May 28, 1976 July 22, 2025 Houston Aeros Winnipeg Jets Winnipeg Arena The Summit yes May 20 4–3 2 archive.ph/CP7sS 13:06 – Anders Hedberg (Hull, Nilsson)15:34 – Lyle Moffat (Beaudin, Lindh) 9:37 – Frank Hughes (Butters, Hale) 9:3719:35 – Mark Howe (West, Hale) 16:10 – pp – Anders Hedberg (Bergman) No scoring 16:43 – Bobby Hull (Nilsson) 9:46 – Mark Howe (Preston) Joe Daley 26 saves / 29 shots Ron Grahame 25 shots / 29 shots May 23 5–4 2 archive.is/veLjF 13:52 – Anders Hedberg (Nilsson) No scoring 2:17 – Willy Lindstrom (Sullivan, Bergman)16:53 - Freeman Asmundson (Lesuk, Guindon) 1:22 – Gordie Howe (M.
