Aston Villa records and statistics The 1890–91 English football season was Aston Villa's fourth season in the Football League. Aston Villa (Villa) made a strong start to the season, winning their first four games and scoring sixteen goals. They eventually finished fourth in The Football League and set a club record for goals scored in a league match while defeating Accrington 12-2. Aston Villa did not draw a single match during the season. It was the FA Cup, however, which retained the most excitement for supporters. Villa defeated Heanor Town F.C., Darwen, local rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C. and Sunderland to reach their second FA Cup final, which was played at The Oval at that time. Villa were matched against their Warwickshire rivals West Bromwich Albion F.C., as they were in 1887 FA Cup Final, where Aston Villa won 2-0. Villa were viewed as strong favourites in 1892, as they had already beaten Albion home and away in the league; in the end, they were defeated 3-0. After the match, rumours circulated that goalkeeper Jimmy Warner had thrown the match. He would be transferred to Newton Heath F.C. following the controversy, which included accusations that he had thrown the match to resolve gambling debts.Motson John Motson's FA Cup Odyssey: The World's Greatest Knockout Competition Robson Books 2005 9781861059031 English The campaign was part of a relatively dominant period in Aston Villa's history: footballers such as James Cowan, Charlie Athersmith and John Devey are noted for their contributions during this season and the following years. In addition the eventual captain Jack Devey debuted this year.https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/villa-seasons Aston Villa's Seasons AVFC History As late as 1901, in the warm weather months, Villa would forgo their heavier woollen club colours in favour of thin cotton red shirts.Aston Villa, Sports Argus, 14 September 1901 First Division 1891–92 Football League First Division AST Matches 5 September 1891 Aston Villa 5–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/114 Blackburn Rovers Percy Hislop; Jack Devey; Billy Dickson; Charlie Athersmith Wellington Road W 12 September 1891 Aston Villa 5–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/115 West Bromwich Albion Charlie Athersmith; Jack Devey; Percy Hislop; Billy Dickson Wellington Road W 19 September 1891 Preston North End 0–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/116 Aston Villa Percy Hislop Deepdale W 28 September 1891 Aston Villa 5–3 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/117 Sunderland James Brown; Dennis Hodgetts; Billy Dickson; Jack Devey; Charlie Athersmith Wellington Road W 3 October 1891 Derby County 4–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/118 Aston Villa Billy Dickson (2) Racecourse Ground L 10 October 1891 Aston Villa 1–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/119 Bolton Wanderers Percy Hislop Wellington Road L 17 October 1891 Burnley 4–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/120 Aston Villa Billy Dickson Turf Moor L 24 October 1891 Stoke 2–3 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/121 Aston Villa Lewis Campbell; Jack Devey; Billy Dickson Victoria Ground W 31 October 1891 Darwen 1–5 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/122 Aston Villa Lewis Campbell (2); Charlie Hare (2); Jack Devey Barley Bank W 7 November 1891 Aston Villa 5–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/123 Notts County Jack Devey; Dennis Hodgetts; Lewis Campbell; Charlie Hare; Charlie Athersmith Wellington Road W 14 November 1891 West Bromwich Albion 0–3 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/124 Aston Villa Jack Devey; Lewis Campbell; Charlie Hare Stoney Lane W 21 November 1891 Aston Villa 2–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/125 Stoke Lewis Campbell; Charlie Athersmith Wellington Road W 28 November 1891 Everton 5–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/126 Aston Villa Dennis Hodgetts Anfield L 5 December 1891 Aston Villa 6–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/127 Burnley Jack Devey; Billy Dickson; James Brown Wellington Road W 19 December 1891 Wolverhampton Wanderers 2–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/128 Aston Villa Molineux L 26 December 1891 Aston Villa 7–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/129 Darwen Dennis Hodgetts; Lewis Campbell; Charlie Athersmith; Jack Devey Wellington Road W 28 December 1891 Aston Villa 3–4 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/130 Everton Jack Devey; Dennis Hodgetts Wellington Road L 2 January 1892 Notts County 5–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/131 Aston Villa Charlie Athersmith; Jack Devey Trent Bridge L 4 January 1892 Accrington 3–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/132 Aston Villa Charlie Athersmith; Jack Devey Thorneyholme Road L 9 January 1892 Aston Villa 6–0 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/133 Derby County Jack Devey; Billy Dickson; Dennis Hodgetts; Lewis Campbell; Charlie Athersmith Wellington Road W 5 March 1892 Blackburn Rovers 4–3 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/138 Aston Villa Lewis Campbell; Billy Dickson Ewood Park L 12 March 1892 Aston Villa 12–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/139 Accrington Dennis Hodgetts; Jack Devey (5); Billy Dickson (3); Lewis Campbell (3) Wellington Road W 26 March 1892 Sunderland 2–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/141 Aston Villa Jack Devey Newcastle Road L 2 April 1892 Bolton Wanderers 1–2 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/142 Aston Villa Jack Devey; Billy Dickson Pike's Lane W 16 April 1892 Aston Villa 3–1 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/143 Preston North End Billy Dickson (2); Jack Devey Wellington Road W 18 April 1892 Aston Villa 3–6 https://www.avfchistory.co.uk/game/144 Wolverhampton Wanderers Dennis Hodgetts; Billy Dickson; Jack Devey Wellington Road L Source: avfchistory.co.uk FA Cup 1892 FA Cup Final 1892_final_fa_cup_illustration.jpg Illustration of the match by Stephen Dadd 1891–92 FA Cup West Bromwich Albion 3 Aston Villa 0 19 March 1892 Kennington Oval London Charles Clegg 32,710 Warm, Sunny and cloudless 1892 FA Cup Final Round Date Opponent Venue Result Score1st Round 16 January Heanor Town H W 4-12nd Round 30 Jan Darwen H W 2-03rd Round 13 February Wolves A W 3-1Semi-Final Sunderland at Sheffield W 4-1Final 19 March West Brom The Oval L 0–3 Birmingham Senior Cup Birmingham Senior Cup References Category:Aston Villa F.C. seasons Aston Villa F.C.
