Due to the Bosman ruling, restrictions on foreign players in matchday squads were lifted from this season. The tournament was won by Borussia Dortmund in a 3–1 final victory against defending champions Juventus. It was their only title in the tournament to date, and the first title for Germany since its reunification in 1990. Association team allocation 24 teams entered the competition: the national champions of each of the top 23 nations in the UEFA coefficient rankings, and UEFA Champions League holders, Juventus. The national champions of the associations ranked 1–7, plus the title holders, all received a bye to the group stage, while the national champions of the associations ranked 8–23 entered in the qualifying round. The remaining national champions from the associations ranked 24–48 were only allowed to participate in UEFA Cup.https://kassiesa.net/uefa/data/method1/crank1996.html UEFA Country Ranking 1996 Bert Kassies 29 January 2025 Association ranking For the 1996–97 UEFA Champions League, the associations were allocated places according to their 1996 UEFA association coefficients, which took into account their performance in European competitions from 1991–92 to 1995–96.http://www.mogiel.net/EC/ranking.php#1997/98 1991/92–1995/96 Pawel Mogielnicki 28 January 2025Protzen Martin https://kassiesa.net/uefa/history/faq1996.txt FAQ: Qualification and Seeding for the European Cups RSSSF 29 May 1996 28 January 2025 Apart from the allocation based on the association coefficients, an association could have an additional team participating in the Champions League, as noted below: (TH) – Additional berth for UEFA Champions League title holders +Association ranking for 1996–97 UEFA Champions LeagueRankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes1ITA61.2591+1 (TH)2FRA 197445.4083ESP43.9324GER42.1405NED38.7006POR32.8007ENG30.1668BEL27.8009GRE27.00010RUS25.20011TUR22.91612DEN22.00013AUT21.95014SWE18.75015SUI18.25016CZE17.00017SCO16.550RankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes18NOR15.832119UKR15.66520HUN15.24921ROU15.15022POL14.91623ISR14.41624CYP 196012.665025CRO12.50026LVA11.16627SVK10.99928SVN10.33229GEO 199010.00030ISL9.66631FIN9.58232BUL9.25033BLR 19958.50034NIR5.332RankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes35MKD Macedonia5.000036MDA5.00037IRL4.33138MLT4.33139LTU 19884.00040ALB 19923.66641LUX3.33342FRO3.00043LIE3.000Note LIE44WAL2.66645ARM2.50046EST2.00047FRY1.00048AZE 19910.50049AND0.00050SMR0.000 Distribution RoundTeams entering in this roundTeams advancing from the previous roundQualifying round(16 teams) 16 champions from associations 8–23Group stage(16 teams) Title holders 7 champions from associations 1–7 8 winners from the qualifying roundKnockout stage(8 teams) 4 group winners from the group stage 4 group runners-up from the group stage Teams Group stageITA Juventus (TH)FRA 1974 Auxerre (1st)GER Borussia Dortmund (1st)POR Porto (1st)ITA Milan (1st)ESP Atlético Madrid (1st)NED Ajax (1st)ENG Manchester United (1st)Qualifying roundBEL Club Brugge (1st)DEN Brøndby (1st)CZE Slavia Prague (1st)HUN Ferencváros (1st)GRE Panathinaikos (1st)AUT Rapid Wien (1st)SCO Rangers (1st)ROU Steaua București (1st)RUS Alania Vladikavkaz (1st)SWE IFK Göteborg (1st)NOR Rosenborg (1st)POL Widzew Łódź (1st)TUR Fenerbahçe (1st)SUI Grasshopper (1st)UKR Dynamo Kyiv (1st)ISR Maccabi Tel Aviv (1st) disc Note LIE Liechtenstein (LIE): The teams affiliated with the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) played in the Swiss football league system, and thus were ineligible for a spot regardless of the association ranking.
