The first game, at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 6 April 1997, ended in a 1–1 draw after extra time. Fabrizio Ravanelli opened the scoring only for Leicester's Emile Heskey to equalise in the last minute of extra time. Heskey was fortunate to be on the field, having committed what was a bookable foul on Boro captain Nigel Pearson after already being booked. Leicester won the replay, and their second League Cup, in the game played at Hillsborough Stadium on 16 April 1997 with another extra-time goal, this time from Steve Claridge.Coca Cola Cup 1996/97 http://www.soccerbase.com/tournaments/tournament.sd?tourn_id=489 Soccerbase 8 December 2016 This was the last year that the Football League Cup final was decided by a replay. The Football League Cup http://www.soccer.mistral.co.uk/books/flctext.htm soccer.mistral.co.uk 8 December 2016 5 October 2018 https://web.archive.org/web/20181005085103/http://www.soccer.mistral.co.uk/books/flctext.htm dead Road to Wembley Leicester City Round 2, 1st leg: Scarborough 0–2 Leicester City Round 2, 2nd leg: Leicester City 2–1 Scarborough Round 3: York City 0–2 Leicester City Round 4: Leicester City 2–0 Manchester United Quarter-final: Ipswich Town 0–1 Leicester City Semi-final, 1st leg: Leicester City 0–0 Wimbledon Semi-final, 2nd leg: Wimbledon 1–1 Leicester City (on away goals)Middlesbrough Round 2, 1st leg: Middlesbrough 7–0 Hereford United Round 2, 2nd leg: Hereford United 0–3 Middlesbrough Round 3: Middlesbrough 5–1 Huddersfield Town Round 4: Middlesbrough 3–1 Newcastle United Quarter-final: Middlesbrough 2–1 Liverpool Semi-final, 1st leg: Stockport County 0–2 Middlesbrough Semi-final, 2nd leg: Middlesbrough 0–1 Stockport County Match details 6 April 1997 15:00 BST Leicester City 1–1 yes Middlesbrough Report Heskey 118 Ravanelli 95 Wembley Stadium, London 76,757 Martin Bodenham (Cornwall) _whiteborder _vneckwhite _whiteborder _darkbluesides_2 0000FF 0000FF 0000FF FFFFFF 0000FF Leicester City _whiteborder _whitecollarplain _whiteborder _band_black FF0000 FF0000 FF0000 FFFFFF FFFFFF Middlesbrough GK 13USA Kasey KellerDF 2 ENG Simon GraysonDF 3 ENG Mike Whitlow 105DF 5 ENG Steve Walsh (c)DF 15SWE Pontus Kåmark DF 17ENG Spencer Prior MF 6 TUR Muzzy Izzet 108MF 7 NIR Neil LennonMF 10ENG Garry ParkerFW 9 ENG Steve ClaridgeFW 11ENG Emile Heskey Substitutes:GK 1 ENG Kevin PooleMF 8 ENG Scott Taylor 108FW 12ENG Mark Robins 105Manager:NIR Martin O'Neill GK 19AUS Mark SchwarzerDF 2 ENG Neil Cox DF 14IRL Curtis FlemingDF 5 ENG Nigel Pearson (c)DF 18ITA Gianluca FestaMF 21ENG Craig HignettMF 8 ENG Robbie MustoeMF 10BRA Juninho Paulista MF 6 BRA EmersonFW 9 DEN Mikkel Beck FW 11ITA Fabrizio RavanelliSubstitutes:DF 4 ENG Steve VickersDF 17WAL Clayton BlackmoreMF 12 IRL Alan MooreManager:ENG Bryan Robson Match rules 90 minutes 30 minutes of extra-time if necessary Replay if scores still level Three named substitutes Maximum of three substitutions Replay 16 April 1997 Leicester City 1–0 yes Middlesbrough Report Claridge 100 Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield 39,428 Martin Bodenham (Cornwall) _whiteborder _vneckwhite _whiteborder _darkbluesides_2 0000FF 0000FF 0000FF FFFFFF 0000FF Leicester _whiteborder _whitecollarplain _whiteborder _band_black FF0000 FF0000 FF0000 FFFFFF FFFFFF Middlesbrough GK 13USA Kasey KellerRWB 2 ENG Simon GraysonCB 3 ENG Mike Whitlow 109CB 5 ENG Steve Walsh (c)CB 17ENG Spencer Prior LWB 15SWE Pontus KåmarkCM 6 TUR Muzzy Izzet CM 7 NIR Neil Lennon CM 10ENG Garry ParkerCF 9 ENG Steve Claridge 117CF 11ENG Emile Heskey Substitutes:GK 1 ENG Kevin PooleDF 21 ENG Jamie Lawrence 109FW 12ENG Mark Robins 117Manager:NIR Martin O'Neill GK 25ENG Ben RobertsRB 2 ENG Neil Cox 105CB 5 ENG Nigel Pearson (c)CB 18ITA Gianluca Festa 76LB 7 SVK Vladimir Kinder CM 17WAL Clayton BlackmoreCM 6 BRA EmersonCM 8 ENG Robbie MustoeAM 10BRA Juninho Paulista CF 21ENG Craig Hignett 105CF 11ITA Fabrizio RavanelliSubstitutes:DF 4 ENG Steve Vickers 76MF 12 IRL Alan Moore 105FW 9 DEN Mikkel Beck 105Manager:ENG Bryan Robson Match rules 90 minutes 30 minutes of extra-time if necessary Penalty shootout if scores still level Three named substitutes Maximum of three substitutions References External links Category:1996–97 in English men's football cups Category:EFL Cup seasons Category:EFL Cup finals League Cup final 1997 League Cup final 1997 Football League Cup final Football League Cup final
