The Cavaliers were led by ninth-year head coach Frank Murray and played their home games at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. They competed as independents, finishing with a record of 7–2. On October 8, 1945, Virginia made their first appearance in the AP Poll in school history when they were ranked 20th in the year's first poll. They dropped from the poll the following week, but reentered November 5 as they continued a seven-game win-streak. The Cavaliers did not finish ranked, however, being knocked from the polls after season-ending losses to rivals Maryland and North Carolina. Their first ranked finish would come in 1951. Murray left the team following the season to return to coaching at Marquette, where he had coached from 1927 to 1936.Murray Returns As Coach At Marquette: Resumes Old Football Job On March 15 Chicago Daily Tribune March 3, 1946 A1 He ended his career at Virginia as the school's longest-serving and winningest coach.https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/virginia/coaches.html Virginia Cavaliers Coaches Sports-Reference.com June 18, 2018 Schedule 1945 AP September 22 w 1945 Coast Guard Bears Coast Guard Scott Stadium Charlottesville, VA 39–0 4,500 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-roanoke-times-coast-guard-easy-saili/150523406/ The Roanoke Times Coast Guard easy sailing for Virginia September 23, 1945 May 2, 2024 Newspapers.com September 29 w y NC State Foreman Field Norfolk, VA 26–6 20,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/news-and-record-state-loses-cavaliers-t/137256414/ Greensboro Daily News State loses; Cavaliers topples Wolfpack September 30, 1945 December 22, 2023 Newspapers.com October 6 w y VMI City Stadium Lynchburg, VA 40–7 8,000 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/91775566/cavaliers-score-another-victory/ The News and Observer Cavaliers score another victory October 7, 1945 January 3, 2022 Newspapers.com October 27 w y VPI Victory Stadium Roanoke, VA rivalry 31–13 12,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/richmond-times-dispatch-cavaliers-defeat/137256891/ Richmond Times-Dispatch Cavaliers defeat Virginia Tech, 31–13 October 28, 1945 December 22, 2023 Newspapers.com November 3 w y West Virginia Laidley Field Charleston, WV 13–7 9,000 https://www.newspapers.com/article/the-herald-sun-virginia-gains-137-win-o/150523296/ Durham Morning Herald Virginia gains 13–7 win over West Virginia November 4, 1945 May 2, 2024 Newspapers.com November 10 w y 15 Richmond Scott Stadium Charlottesville, VA 45–0 7,000 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/112741050/brown-scores-4-touchdowns-for-cavaliers/ Norfolk Virginian-Pilot Brown scores 4 touchdowns for Cavaliers November 11, 1945 November 8, 2022 Newspapers.com November 17 w 13 Oceana NAS Scott Stadium Charlottesville, VA 40–0 6,500 Va.
