Robert Vágner was particularly active in attack, and he gave Újpest the lead in the 26th minute with a 25-metre shot that went past goalkeeper Tamás Takács. Haladás responded by improving its play after the goal, but struggled to create clear scoring opportunities before half-time. Early in the second half, Haladás made two substitutions as manager Lázár Szentes sought to strengthen his team. Újpest continued to threaten on the counter-attack, with Radek Slončík forcing a save from Takács in the 57th minute. Haladás gradually increased its pressure, although much of its possession produced few clear chances. In the 74th minute, Péter Halmosi equalised for Haladás with a left-footed shot from 18 metres following Leandro's pass. The equaliser was considered deserved as Haladás had increased its attacking pressure while Újpest had increasingly concentrated on defending. After the goal, however, and particularly during extra time, Haladás began to tire and Újpest pushed the Szombathely side back towards its own penalty area. Despite Újpest's territorial dominance in extra time, neither side initially produced a decisive scoring opportunity. Both teams had further chances late in the match, including opportunities for Tibor Tokody and Halmosi. In the final minute of extra time, Vágner scored again after Dejan Poljaković's cross, controlling the ball with his chest before shooting from close range to make it 2–1. The goal secured Újpest's victory and ensured their spot in the qualifying round of 2002–03 UEFA Cup. After the final whistle, Újpest supporters entered the pitch to celebrate with the players, while the referee ended the match with at least 500 supporters on the field.https://adt.arcanum.com/en/view/NemzetiSport_2002_05/?pg=0&layout=s Nemzeti Sport, 2002. május (13. évfolyam, 117-144. szám) Nemzeti Sport, May 2002 (Vol. 13, No 117-144) Nemzeti Sport 0866-2517 subscription 20 August 2026 arcanum.com hu Details 2002 05 01 y 18:00 CEST (UTC+2) Haladás 1–2 yes Report Újpest Halmosi 74 Vágner 26 120 Stadion ETO, Győr 10,000 Attila Ábrahám GK HUN Tamás TakácsDF HUN András KajDF BRA Flávio Pim 67DF HUN István Szekér 65MF HUN Csaba Somfalvi 105MF HUN László Némethy 46MF BRA LeandroMF ROU Tibor SelymesFW BRA Fred 55FW BRA AlexFW HUN Péter HalmosiSubstitutes:DF BRA Japa 97 67 MF HUN Tamás Juhász 46FW BIH Almir Filipović 85 55Manager:HUN Lázár Szentes GK HUN Zsolt Posza 61DF SVK František KunzoDF HUN Zoltán Tamási 76DF CZE Luboš KozelDF HUN Zsolt Lőw 48MF HUN Zoltán SzélesiMF HUN Károly ErősMF CZE Radek Slončík 68MF HUN Gábor KorolovszkyFW HUN Tibor Tokody 99FW CZE Robert VágnerSubstitutes:MF CRO Dejan Poljaković 73 68FW HUN Tamás Móri 99Manager:HUN Róbert Glázer Assistant referees: János Balajti Grigorisz GeorgiouMatch rules 90 minutes 30 minutes of extra time if necessary Penalty shoot-out if scores still level See also 2001–02 Haladás VFC season References Category:Magyar Kupa finals Magyar Kupa final 2002 Magyar Kupa final 2002 Category:Sport in Győr Category:May 2002 sports events in Hungary Category:2001–02 in Hungarian football
