10th Avenue is a proposed station, first planned as part of the 7 Subway Extension for the IRT Flushing Line (Flushing) of the New York City Subway. It would be located at 10th Avenue and 41st Street and have two tracks and two side platforms if built. Under the original 2007 plan, there would be one street-level entrance for each direction, and no crossovers or crossunders to allow free transfer between directions.
The station was not built due to a lack of funding, but it could be completed if funding became available to build it. Various development proposals since 2009 have included completion of the station.
Initial plans
Construction of the station was planned as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, and construction was deemed possible as demand in the area grew.February 16, 2011 No. 7 Subway Extension - Hudson Yards Development Corporation http://www.hydc.org/html/project/subway.shtml dead https://web.archive.org/web/20150209053224/http://www.hydc.org/html/project/subway.shtml February 9, 2015 May 14, 2014 Hydc.org It was originally planned to be constructed as part of the 7 Subway Extension.http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/19/no-7-extension-wont-include-10th-ave-station/ No. 7 Extension Won't Include 10th Ave. Station The New York Times City Room September 19, 2008 April 16, 2014 Neuman, William January 8, 2014 https://web.archive.org/web/20140108014853/http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/19/no-7-extension-wont-include-10th-ave-station/ live The station would originally have had two exits from the eastbound platform to 40th Street—one at Hudson Boulevard and one east of 10th Avenue—and one from the westbound platform to 42nd Street east of 10th Avenue.http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/pdf/hyards/hy_chap11_g2_fgeis_final.pdf NO. 7 SUBWAY EXTENSION-HUDSON YARDS REZONING AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM nyc.gov September 26, 2015 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20160304215819/http://www.nyc.gov/html/dcp/pdf/hyards/hy_chap11_g2_fgeis_final.pdf March 4, 2016 Among the proponents is former deputy mayor Dan Doctoroff, who stated in 2015 that building the 10th Avenue station would boost development for decades.Doctoroff Daniel L. A $450 million option to build a shell for the station was included as part of the October 2007 contract, requiring action by the city within nine months to have a shell built as part of the initial contract. Reports in late December 2007 indicated that the postponed station might be partially built, should the City of New York and the MTA come to terms on the additional financing for the station shell.7 Line Extension May Get 41st Street Stop Marlene Naanes http://www.amny.com/news/local/am-mta1221,0,632084.story amNewYork December 20, 2007 February 28, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20090513011927/http://www.amny.com/news/local/am-mta1221%2C0%2C632084.story May 13, 2009 dead 2007 10, the city had no plans to fund the station; however, it could still be built if $550 million was raised privately to build the station.Saul, Michael Howard June 30, 2010 New Hope for Tenth Avenue Station on the No. 7 Subway Extension The Wall Street Journal https://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2010/06/30/new-hope-for-tenth-avenue-station-on-the-no-7-subway-extension/ July 26, 2013 October 4, 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20131004221905/http://blogs.wsj.com/metropolis/2010/06/30/new-hope-for-tenth-avenue-station-on-the-no-7-subway-extension/ live Construction of the station was estimated to have cost at least $450 million as of 2013.Smith Stephen J. Developers and local residents created a petition to construct the shell, fearing that the opportunity for a station would be lost once tunnel excavation was completed. In June 2010, the city announced it was seeking funding to assess the feasibility of constructing the station at a later date, using a two-platform, two-entrance model without an underground connecting passage. This type of station, while common in Manhattan, is not considered ideal by the MTA, but would nonetheless be acceptable were funding eventually found.Outcry Emerges for 41st St. Stop on New 7-Line Theresa Agovino http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20100216/FREE/100219925 Crain's New York Business February 16, 2010 April 3, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100218115623/http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20100216/FREE/100219925 February 18, 2010 live West Side Developers Fight For 7 Line Extension Jill Urban http://www.ny1.com/1-all-boroughs-news-content/ny1_living/116312/west-side-developers-fight-for-7-line-extension NY1 April 2, 2010 April 3, 2010 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20100417140042/http://www.ny1.com/1-all-boroughs-news-content/ny1_living/116312/west-side-developers-fight-for-7-line-extension/ April 17, 2010 City Officials Seek Federal Assistance For 7 Subway Extension http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/top_stories/117672/city-officials-seek-federal-assistance-for-7-subway-extension NY1 April 27, 2010 April 27, 2010 https://web.archive.org/web/20100531155214/http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/top_stories/117672/city-officials-seek-federal-assistance-for-7-subway-extension May 31, 2010 dead mdy-all City Considering 10th Avenue Stop For 7 Train http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/120156/city-considering-10th-avenue-stop-for-7-train NY1 June 10, 2010 June 10, 2010 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20120927055352/http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stories/120156/city-considering-10th-avenue-stop-for-7-train September 27, 2012 The planned entrances would still be located two blocks apart due to the location's depth—with the westbound entrance on 42nd Street and the eastbound entrance on 40th Street—but the new plan only called for one exit in each direction.Mayor Applies For Funds To Redesign 7 Train Extension http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/top_stories/121366/mayor-applies-for-funds-to-redesign-7-train-extension NY1 June 30, 2010 June 30, 2010 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20110714220335/http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/top_stories/121366/mayor-applies-for-funds-to-redesign-7-train-extension July 14, 2011 New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated that he hoped that the station would be built in the future, with several others saying that building it would be "still possible".
Further proposals
Construction of the line proceeded to its completion in 2014 without the station or its shell, which would have been between the Times Square and 34th Street–Hudson Yards stations. While no station infrastructure was constructed, a vent structure exists near the proposed location, and the tunnel levels out for a considerable length in the same general area.MTA.info—3H6RiLzW7ng Video Release: Mayor Bloomberg Rides First 7 Train to 34 St - 12/20/2013.
