Season summary In the 1996–97 season, Millwall had a tough finish to the campaign after being top of the table at the beginning of December which included a poor run of just five wins from their remaining 26 league games that saw them plummet down the table and ended up finishing in a disappointing 14th place. The club also experienced extreme financial difficulties that resulted in them being placed in financial administration for a short time. Jimmy Nicholl was relieved of his duties in February and John Docherty returned on a short term basis to stabilise the club at playing level.Walters Mike Nicholl out in Lions purge. http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Nicholl+out+in+Lions+purge.-a061106629 The Free Library The Mirror 11 February 1997 22 June 2015 Final league table 1996–97 Football League#Second Division Second Division y MIL Results Millwall's score comes firsthttp://www.statto.com/football/teams/millwall/1996-1997/results Millwall results for the 1996-1997 season - Statto.com 2015-06-22 https://web.archive.org/web/20150629035330/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/millwall/1996-1997/results 2015-06-29 live Legend WinDrawLoss Football League Second Division DateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceScorers 17 August 1996 WrexhamH1–19,371Crawford (pen) 24 August 1996 WatfordA2–09,495Harle, Crawford 27 August 1996 York CityA2–33,108Savage, Malkin 31 August 1996 BurnleyH2–19,281Newman, Neill 7 September 1996 Bristol RoversH2–07,881Rogan, Huckerby 10 September 1996 Peterborough UnitedA3–34,442Huckerby, Neill, Malkin 14 September 1996 Notts CountyA2–14,473Neill, Robinson (own goal) 21 September 1996 Crewe AlexandraH2–09,320Huckerby, Dair 28 September 1996 Preston North EndA1–29,400Newman 2 October 1996 Stockport CountyH3–47,537Rogan (2), Hartley 5 October 1996 Plymouth ArgyleA0–07,507 12 October 1996 ChesterfieldH2–17,765Neill, Rogan 16 October 1996 BuryH1–06,447Rogan 19 October 1996 GillinghamA3–29,305Crawford (2), Hartley 26 October 1996 BrentfordA0–07,691 30 October 1996 BlackpoolH2–17,179Rogan (2 pens) 2 November 1996 WalsallH1–09,176Crawford 9 November 1996 Bristol CityA1–112,326Crawford 20 November 1996 Shrewsbury TownH2–15,770Crawford (2) 23 November 1996 Rotherham UnitedA0–03,286 29 November 1996 BrentfordH0–07,845 3 December 1996 Wycombe WanderersA0–14,550 14 December 1996 BournemouthA1–14,494Bright 18 December 1996 Luton TownH0–17,077 26 December 1996 Peterborough UnitedH0–28,118 11 January 1997 Preston North EndH3–27,096Cadette, Crawford, Savage 18 January 1997 Stockport CountyA1–57,502Webber 25 January 1997 BlackpoolA0–34,523 1 February 1997 Bristol CityH0–29,158 8 February 1997 WalsallA1–23,833Bowry 15 February 1997 Rotherham UnitedH2–07,043Crawford, Gayle (own goal) 22 February 1997 Shrewsbury TownA1–12,968Doyle 25 February 1997 Notts CountyH1–05,202Savage 1 March 1997 Wycombe WanderersH2–17,539Hartley, Dolby 8 March 1997 Luton TownA2–08,585Dolby, Hartley 15 March 1997 BournemouthH0–19,992 18 March 1997 Crewe AlexandraA0–03,695 22 March 1997 WatfordH0–18,713 28 March 1997 WrexhamA3–34,634Crawford, Newman, Rogan (pen) 2 April 1997 York CityH1–16,161Webber 5 April 1997 BurnleyA0–19,840 8 April 1997 Bristol RoversA0–15,324 12 April 1997 Plymouth ArgyleH0–05,702 19 April 1997 ChesterfieldA0–15,935 26 April 1997 GillinghamH0–28,946 3 May 1997 BuryA0–29,785 FA Cup 1996–97 FA Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR115 November 1996 WokingA2–25,448Savage, CrawfordR1R26 November 1996 WokingH0–16,048 League Cup 1996–97 Football League Cup +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersR1 1st Leg 21 August 1996 Peterborough UnitedH1–05,145MalkinR1 2nd Leg 3 September 1996 Peterborough UnitedA0–2 (lost 1–2 on agg)4,610 Football League Trophy 1996–97 Football League Trophy +RoundDateOpponentVenueResultAttendanceGoalscorersSR17 December 1996 Hereford UnitedA4–01,710Dair (2), Crawford (2)SR27 January 1997 Colchester UnitedH2–32,795Crawford, Savage Squad http://www.11v11.com/teams/millwall/tab/players/season/1997 All Millwall players: 1997 ENG GK Tim Carter UGA GK Andy Iga ENG GK David Nurse IRL DF Scott Fitzgerald on loan from Wimbledon ENG DF Mike Harle SCO DF Gerard Lavin ENG DF Alan McLeary AUS DF Lucas Neill ENG DF Ricky Newman NIR DF Anton Rogan SCO DF David Sinclair ENG DF Keith Stevens ENG DF Damien Webber ENG DF Tony Witter ENG MF Greg Berry CAN MF Marc Bircham SKN MF Bobby Bowry ENG MF Dean Canoville SCO MF Jason Dair ENG MF Tony Dolby ENG MF Maurice Doyle ENG MF Steve Forbes SCO MF Paul Hartley SCO MF Graham Robertson IRL MF Stephen Roche IRL MF Dave Savage AUS MF Jason van Blerk ENG MF Ray Wilkins ENG FW Mark Bright on loan from Sheffield Wednesday ENG FW Richard Cadette SCO FW Stevie Crawford ENG FW Danny Hockton ENG FW Darren Huckerby ENG FW Chris Malkin ENG FW Lee McRobert IRL FW Richard Sadlier References Category:Millwall F.C. seasons Millwall
