Competing teams, from England, France, Ireland, Italy, Scotland and Wales, were divided into six pools of four, in which teams played home and away matches against each other. The winners of the pools, together with the two best runners-up, qualified for the knock-out stage. This was the first competition in the series to employ the bonus point system for classifying teams. In prior competitions, teams earned two points for a win and one for a draw. Starting with the 2003–04 competition, teams earned points in the pool matches under the following scenarios: Four points for a win Two points for a draw One bonus point for scoring four or more tries, regardless of the final score One bonus point for losing by seven points or less Teams FranceEnglandWalesIrelandScotlandItalyFRA Stade Français FRA Toulouse FRA Biarritz Olympique FRA Agen FRA Bourgoin FRA PerpignanENG Leicester Tigers ENG Leeds Carnegie ENG Sale Sharks ENG Northampton Saints ENG Gloucester ENG London WaspsWAL Newport Gwent Dragons WAL Neath-Swansea Ospreys WAL Cardiff Blues WAL Llanelli Scarlets WAL Celtic WarriorsIreland rugby union Ulster Ireland rugby union Munster Ireland rugby union LeinsterSCO Border Reivers SCO EdinburghITA Benetton Treviso ITA Calvisano Pool stage 2003-04 Heineken Cup pool stage Pool 1 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts FRA Stade Français 6402118313480541118 ENG Leicester Tigers630317107137115223015 Ireland rugby union Ulster6303109110910631114 WAL Newport Gwent Dragons6204516−1167146−79019 Pool 2 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts FRA Toulouse 65011871115765924125 SCO Edinburgh6501147713089412022 ENG Leeds Tykes6105511−666122−56015 WAL Neath-Swansea Ospreys6105618−1278155−77004 Pool 3 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts FRA Biarritz Olympique 64021812613997423120 Ireland rugby union Leinster640213112142113291118 WAL Cardiff Blues620413130123132−90311 ENG Sale Sharks 6204614−875137−62019 Pool 4 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts WAL Llanelli Scarlets 65011751216072882123 ENG Northampton Saints6402134912154671118 FRA Agen 62048718394−111211 SCO The Borders 6105426−2239183−144004 Pool 5 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts Ireland rugby union Munster Rugby65012251717276964024 ENG Gloucester 6501221111197100974024 FRA Bourgoin 61051322−9119191−72217 ITA Benetton Treviso 61051332−19104225−121105 Pool 6 TeamPWDLTries forTries againstTry diffPoints forPoints againstPoints diffTBLBPts ENG rugby London Wasps650122814186851013124 WAL Celtic Warriors 64021110112311852220 FRA Perpignan 63031311211911542115 ITA Ghial Rugby Calvisano 60061330−17115225−110123 Seeding and runners-up SeedPool WinnersPtsTF+/-1 FRA Toulouse2518+922 ENG London Wasps2422+1013 Ireland rugby union Munster2422+974 WAL Llanelli Scarlets2317+885 FRA Biarritz Olympique2018+426 FRA Stade Français1811+54SeedPool Runners-upPtsTF+/-7 ENG Gloucester2422+968 SCO Edinburgh2214+41 – WAL Celtic Warriors2011+5 – ENG Northampton Saints1813+67 – Ireland rugby union Leinster1813+29 – ENG Leicester Tigers1517+22 Knockout stage Quarter-finals 4 April 2004 19:45 Llanelli Scarlets WAL 10–27 FRA Biarritz Stradey Park, Llanelli 10,800 10 April 2004 16:00 Toulouse FRA 36–10 SCO Edinburgh Stadium de Toulouse 36,500 10 April 2004 17:00 Munster IRE rugby union 37–32 Report FRA Stade Français Thomond Park, Limerick 13,000 11 April 2004 15:00 London Wasps ENG 34–3 ENG Gloucester Adams Park, High Wycombe 10,000 Semi-finals 24 April 2004 16:00 Toulouse FRA 19–11 FRA Biarritz Stade Chaban-Delmas, Bordeaux 34,000 25 April 2004 15:00 Munster IRE rugby union 32–37 Report ENG London Wasps Lansdowne Road, Dublin 49,000 Final 2004 Heineken Cup Final 23 May 2004 15:00 London Wasps ENG 27–20 Report FRA Toulouse Abbott 19' cVan Gisbergen 43' cHowley 79' c Van Gisbergen (3) Van Gisbergen (2) 15', 31' Delaigue 38' m Delaigue (2) 6', 12'Élissalde (3) 57', 72', 77' Twickenham Stadium, London 73,057 Alain Rolland (Ireland) Category:Heineken Cup seasons
