The election was delayed for one year and the terms of councillors elected in 1961 were extended. Councillors elected in 1965 served a two-year term and the normal cycle resumed in 1967. This was done to coincide with the creation of Greater London on 1 April 1965 and the large transfer of territory and population from Essex.Vigars Leonard Home counties look to the polls Evening News 5 January 1965 9As respects the counties of Essex, Kent and Surrey the ordinary election of county councillors due (apart from this paragraph) to take place in April 1964 shall be postponed until such date in 1965 as the Secretary of State may by order specify in relation to the county in question, and - (a) the county councillors and county aldermen due (apart from this paragraph) to retire on the ordinary day of retirement in 1964 or at the annual meeting of the county council in 1964, as the case may be, shall (unless they resign their offices or their offices otherwise become vacant) continue to hold office until the day in 1965 on which the county councillors elected at the postponed elections in that year come into office; (b) the county councillors elected at those postponed elections shall retire on the ordinary day of retirement of county councillors in 1967 London Government Act 1963 https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1963/33 Summary 1965 Essex County Council election Conservative Party (UK) 47 61.0 52.3 88,214 Labour Party (UK) 29 37.7 41.4 69,886 Liberal Party (UK) 1 1.3 5.1 8,522 Independent politician 0 0.0 1.1 1,884 Communist Party of Great Britain 0 0.0 0.1 131 |} Division results Results from 4 divisions are missing from the source document and are therefore not listed here.
