For the second year in a row, the Blue Crown Spark Plug teammates Mauri Rose and Bill Holland finished 1st-2nd. Rose became the second driver to win the Indianapolis 500 in consecutive years. Unlike the previous year's race, no controversy surrounds the results. Coupled with his co-victory in 1941, Rose became the third three-time winner at Indy. Fourth place finisher Ted Horn completed a noteworthy record of nine consecutive races from 1936 to 1948 completing 1,799 out of a possible 1,800 laps. His nine consecutive finishes of 4th or better (however, with no victories) is the best such streak in Indy history. The only lap he missed in 1940 was due to being flagged for a rain shower. Duke Nalon's third-place finish would be the best-ever result for the popular Novi engine. The Talk of Gasoline Alley - 1070-AM WIBC, May 20, 2007 As a point of interest, Billy Devore competed in a six-wheeled Kurtis Kraft, finishing 12th — the only car of this type ever to compete in the Indianapolis 500.[10 – Curious Indy 500 cars] Starting grid RowInsideMiddleOutside 15 USA 1912 Rex Mays2 USA 1912 Bill Holland3 USA 1912 Mauri Rose gold W silver 261 USA 1912 Jimmy Jackson1 USA 1912 Ted Horn74 USA 1912 Doc Williams 336 USA 1912 Bill Cantrell orange R silver98 USA 1912 Johnny Mantz orange R silver34 USA 1912 Les Anderson 455 USA 1912 Joie Chitwood54 USA 1912 Duke Nalon4 USA 1912 Charles Van Acker 552 USA 1912 Jack McGrath orange R silver63 USA 1912 Hal Cole76 USA 1912 Sam Hanks 68 USA 1912 Emil Andres9 USA 1912 George Connor64 USA 1912 Hal Robson 731 USA 1912 Chet Miller19 USA 1912 Billy Devore35 USA 1912 Mack Hellings orange R silver 86 USA 1912 Tony Bettenhausen7 USA 1912 Tommy Hinnershitz53 USA 1912 Bill Sheffler 925 USA 1912 Paul Russo65 USA 1912 Harry McQuinn33 USA 1912 Johnny Mauro orange R silver 1091 USA 1912 Lee Wallard orange R silver16 USA 1912 Duane Carter orange R silver51 USA 1912 Spider Webb orange R silver 1186 USA 1912 Mike Salay orange R silver26 USA 1912 Fred Agabashian17 USA 1912 Mel Hansen orange R Indianapolis 500 rookie solid 1px darkgray gold W Indianapolis 500 winner solid 1px darkgray Alternates First alternate: Johnny Shackleford orange R silver (#48)The Talk of Gasoline Alley -
