The regular season ended on October 1, with the New York Giants and New York Yankees were the regular season champions of the National League and American League, respectively. In a rematch of the previous season, the postseason began with Game 1 of the 19th World Series on October 4 and ended with Game 5 on October 8. In the second consecutive iteration of the Subway Series, the Giants defeated the Yankees, four games to zero (with one tie), capturing their third championship in franchise history, and the fourth team to win back-to-back World Series. This was the second World Series between the two teams. This was the first of eight seasons that "League Awards", a precursor to the Major League Baseball Most Valuable Player Award (introduced in 1931), were issued. Only an American League award was given in 1922. Schedule Major League Baseball schedule The 1922 schedule consisted of 154 games for all teams in the American League and National League, each of which had eight teams. Each team was scheduled to play 22 games against the other seven teams of their respective league. This continued the format put in place since the 1904 season (except for 1919) and would be used until 1961 in the American League and 1962 in the National League. Opening Day, April 13, featured all sixteen teams, for the first time since 1917. The final day of the regular season was on October 1. The World Series took place between October 4 and October 8. Rule change In June, a 1911 rule regarding barnstorming by World Series players was upheld by the National League, though the American League amended the rule to say that no barnstorming could go on past October 31.Marren Joe 1921 Winter Meetings: Baseball’s First With Judge Landis Society for American Baseball Research https://sabr.org/journal/article/1921-winter-meetings-first-with-landis/ 2025-04-01 en-US Teams LeagueTeamCityBallparkCapacityManager1922 Major League Managers https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/majors/1922-managers.shtml 2025-02-05 Baseball Reference enAmerican League American LeagueBoston Red SoxBoston, MassachusettsFenway Park27,000Hugh DuffyChicago White SoxChicago, IllinoisComiskey Park28,000Kid GleasonCleveland IndiansCleveland, OhioDunn Field21,414Tris SpeakerDetroit TigersDetroit, MichiganNavin Field23,000Ty CobbNew York YankeesNew York, New YorkPolo Grounds38,000Miller HugginsPhiladelphia AthleticsPhiladelphia, PennsylvaniaShibe Park23,000Connie MackSt. Louis BrownsSt. Louis, MissouriSportsman's Park24,040Lee FohlWashington SenatorsWashington, D.C.National Park27,000Clyde MilanNational League National League (baseball) National LeagueBoston BravesBoston, MassachusettsBraves Field40,000Fred Mitchell baseballBrooklyn RobinsNew York, New YorkEbbets Field30,000Wilbert RobinsonChicago CubsChicago, IllinoisCubs Park15,000Bill KilleferCincinnati RedsCincinnati, OhioRedland Field20,696Pat MoranNew York GiantsNew York, New YorkPolo Grounds38,000John McGrawPhiladelphia PhilliesPhiladelphia, PennsylvaniaNational League Park18,000Kaiser Wilhelm baseballPittsburgh PiratesPittsburgh, PennsylvaniaForbes Field25,000George Gibson baseballBill McKechnieSt. Louis CardinalsSt. Louis, MissouriSportsman's Park24,040Branch Rickey Standings start American League New York Yankees break National League New York Giants end Tie games 7 tie games (2 in AL, 5 in NL), which are not factored into winning percentage or games behind (and were often replayed again) occurred throughout the season. start American League Chicago White Sox, 1 Cleveland Indians, 1 Detroit Tigers, 1 Philadelphia Athletics, 1 break National League Boston Braves, 1 Brooklyn Robins, 1 Chicago Cubs, 2 Cincinnati Reds, 2 New York Giants, 2 Philadelphia Phillies, 1 Pittsburgh Pirates, 1 end Postseason The postseason began on October 4 and ended on October 8 with the New York Giants sweeping the New York Yankees in the 1922 World Series in four games.
