The whole council was up for election and the Labour Party gained overall control of the council. Electoral arrangements The election used the wards from the 1964 election for a third time. Councillors were elected for a three-year term for the final time, with a four-year term from the next election in 1974 and subsequent elections. Polling took place on 13 May 1971. Results General election of councillors The Labour Party regained the twenty seats that had been lost in 1968 and won the Harold Wood ward for the first time, gaining three further seats. This gave 30 seats in total with 28 needed for a majority. All transfers of power were from Conservative to Labour, except for the one seat in Hylands that went back from Independent Residents to Labour (having switched the other way in 1968).London Borough Council Elections 13 May 1971 https://londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1971-5-13.pdf https://web.archive.org/web/20150124012200/https://londondatastore-upload.s3.amazonaws.com/docs/LBCE_1971-5-13.pdf dead 24 January 2015 London Datastore Greater London Council 29 March 20151971 London Borough of Havering local election results https://www.havering.gov.uk/downloads/file/4296/1971-london-borough-of-havering-local-election-results Havering Council 29 September 2024Rallings Colin Thrasher Michael London Borough of Havering Election Results 1964-2010 https://www.electionscentre.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Havering-1964-2010.pdf The Elections Centre 1 October 2024 Havering London Borough Council election result, 1971 Labour Party (UK) 30 23 0 23 54.5 47.1 Conservative Party (UK) 13 0 22 22 23.6 32.5 Independent Ratepayers 12 0 1 1 21.8 Liberal Party (UK) 0 0 0 0 1.4 2,804 Independent 0 0 0 0 682 Communist Party of Great Britain 0 0 0 0 524 Aldermanic election In addition to the 55 elected councillors, there were nine aldermen on the council.
