British viewers witness a terrorist attack on the United States and the collapse of the Twin Towers in New York City, live on television. BBC One simulcasts BBC News 24's coverage immediately after the lunchtime showing of Neighbours, cancelling Diagnosis: Murder and a repeat of Birds of a Feather. Both afternoon and evening regional news magazines only runs for five minutes due to the news coverage. A news special replaces Holiday: You Call the Shots, while EastEnders and the season premiere of Changing Rooms airs as usual. A new episode of Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes is replaced by another news special, named America Under Siege, and presented by David Dimbleby, while the documentary series Brighton Bill and the film Fire in the Sky are also dropped, to make way for a repeat of the documentary series Boss Women. BBC One joins BBC News 24 one hour earlier than scheduled. In order to carry the CBBC programming block and the afternoon repeat of Neighbours, who were left over by BBC News 24 coverage on BBC One, BBC Two cancels Awash with Colour, Ready Steady Cook, and The Weakest Link. It also airs BBC News 24's news special while BBC One airs its normal programming, dropping as a result Star Trek: Voyager, Roswell High, a repeat of Bill Oddie Goes Wild and Food and Drink. In addition, the documentary Correspondent: Licence to Kill is replaced by an extended Newsnight. ITV1 made its first news report after the first part of Crossroads ended. The news coverage cancels a repeat of Catchphrase and sends the CITV programming block, The People Versus and the repeat of that day's episode of Crossroads to ITV2. Afternoon and evening local news and magazine programmes are dropped, while Emmerdale airs normally. Another news special replaces The Real Eastenders, with Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? airing in its normal time, while ITV News at Ten starts an hour early, (displacing The Bill) followed by delayed regional news and The Big Match. Nightime programming (The Web Review, another edition of The Big Match, World Sport, Nationwide Football League Extra, American Judge Judy and ITV Nightscreen) are all dropped, in favour of more news and a simulcast of NBC's coverage. Channel 4 is later criticised for its slow response after it continues showing the day's afternoon film That Hamilton Woman for over an hour after other networks have been covering the terrorist attacks.
