It was their 24th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football, following their promotion at the end of the 1957–58 season. They played their home games in the Letzigrund. Overview The club's owner and chairman at this time was Alfred Zweidler. Daniel Jeandupeux remained the first team head coach for the third consecutive season. The FCZ first team competed in the domestic first-tier 1982–83 Nationalliga A and they also competed in 1982–83 Swiss Cup. As the third-place team in last season's championship, the team had qualified for the 1982–83 UEFA Cup. They also entered the 1982 Intertoto Cup. However, in the early stage of the Spring season, following the Basel match on 20 March, the club FCZ and their head coach Daniel Jeandupeux parted ways. Heini Glättli took over the coaching straight away ad interim, standing on the side line for the match against Xamax on 23 March. Then a few days later Max Merkel, who was not on contract at that time, took over ad interim. Finally at the beginning of May, Köbi Kuhn, who since 1979 was in charge of the FCZ youth set-up, was appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season. Players The following is the list of the FCZ first team squad this season. It also includes players that were in the squad the day the domestic league season started, on 14 August 1982, but subsequently left the club after that date. 1 SUI GK Karl Grob league games: 26 SUI GK Hermann Rufli league games: 4 SUI DF Fritz Baur league games: 25 SUI DF Roland Häusermann league games: 26 SUI DF Ruedi Landolt league games: 27 SUI DF Heinz Lüdi league games: 18 SUI DF Bruno Misteli league games: 0 SUI DF René Ruch league games: 0 NZL DF Shane Rufer league games: 6 SUI DF Urs Schönenberger league games: 11 SUI DF Thomas Staub league games: 0 SUI DF Peter Stoll league games: 5 SUI DF Ruedi Zahner league games: 16 SUI DF Gianpietro Zappa league games: 21 SUI MF Walter Iselin league games: 24 SUI MF Daniel Jeandupeux league games: 1 YUG MF Jurica Jerković league games: 30 SUI MF Roger Kundert league games: 0 SUI MF Elmar Landolt league games: 0 SUI MF David Mautone league games: 0 SUI FW Massimo Alliata league games: 6 SUI FW Ruedi Elsener league games: 29 SUI FW Erni Maissen league games: 24 NZL FW Wynton Rufer league games: 23 SUI FW Walter Seiler league games: 26 SUI FW Hans-Peter Zwicker league games: 25 Players who left the squad SUI GK Urs Zurbuchen on loan to Wettingen SUI DF Alberto Erba to Chiasso SUI MF Michele Di Muro to reserves SUI MF Fredi Scheiwiler to Lausanne-Sport SUI FW Beat Grossmann to reserves SUI FW Winfried Kurz to Bellinzona SUI MF Manfred Moser to Chiasso Results Legend #CCFFCC Win 1px solid #AAAAAA #FFFFCC Draw 1px solid #AAAAAA #FFCCCC Loss 1px solid #AAAAAA #CCCCCC Postponed 1px solid #AAAAAA Nationalliga A 1982–83 Nationalliga A League matches Round 1 14 August 1982 20:00 Zürich 5–1 FCZ summary Luzern Lüdi 41 1:0(Waser) 44 ogZwicker 83 3:0Zwicker 87 4:1Rufer 90 5:1 84 3:1 Hemmeter Letzigrund, Zürich 7,000 SUI Jakob Baumann (Schaffhausen) W 400th NLA match of Karl Grob. Jeitziner does his best to prevent this "disgrace" and scored the opening goal very early on.
