In the inaugural season of Sewanee football, the Tigers compiled a 1–2 record. The quarterback for the team's first game was Ellwood Wilson, considered the "founder of Sewanee football." He had come from the Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he played football, to Sewanee in 1889. While introducing the sport to Sewanee, he was forced to use a piece of wood shaped like a football until he found a real one.https://archive.org/stream/sewaneealumninew08univ#page/n5/mode/2up/search/Ellwood+quarterback Founder of Tiger Football Tells How 7 Sewanee Alumni News 8 1 December 1941 Alex Shepherd, a fellow Lawrenceville graduate and the son of Alexander Robey Shepherd, had more playing experience than Wilson and was selected to be the team's first captain.Richardson John Alexander Robey Shepherd: The Man Who Built the Nation’s Capital 2016 Ohio University Press https://www.google.com/books/edition/Alexander_Robey_Shepherd/N6vrDAAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=Alexander+Robey+Shepherd+Sewanee&pg=PT299&printsec=frontcover 30 July 2026 Sewanee's first intercollegiate game was the first instance of the Sewanee–Vanderbilt rivalry and Vanderbilt's second ever game.
