After the marathon 1985 final, which was played with unlimited 10-minute overtimes and required eight of them, the NCAA changed their rules to limit games to one 30-minute overtime and one 30-minute sudden-death period, each with two halves. Although all other tournament games could be decided by penalty kicks, this did not extend to the final. After the 150 minutes were played out, Virginia and Santa Clara were declared co-champions.Goff Steven Virginia, Santa Clara tie for title https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/sports/1989/12/04/virginia-santa-clara-tie-for-title/14acbc00-4d44-4575-9427-d9de65da3661/ Washington Post 4 December 1989 December 3, 1989 Virginia 1–1 yes Report Santa Clara Fallon 27 Baicher 84 Rutgers Stadium Piscataway, NJ 3,889 See also 1989 NCAA Division I women's soccer tournament 1989 NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament 1989 NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament 1989 NAIA men's soccer championship References Category:NCAA Division I men's soccer tournament seasons NCAA Division I Men's NCAA Division I Mens Soccer NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament Category:Soccer competitions in New Jersey Category:Piscataway, New Jersey Category:College sports tournaments in New Jersey
