17 Camelopardalis is a singleEggleton P. P. Tokovinin A. A. A catalogue of multiplicity among bright stellar systems Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 389 2 869–879 September 2008 10.1111/j.1365-2966.2008.13596.x free 2008MNRAS.389..869E 0806.2878 14878976 star in the northern circumpolar constellation of Camelopardalis, located roughly 960 light years away from the Sun. It is visible to the naked eye as a faint, red-hued star with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.44. This object is moving closer to the Earth with a heliocentric radial velocity of −20 km/s.
This is an ageing red giant star, currently on the asymptotic giant branch,Eggen Olin J. Asymptotic giant branch stars near the sun Astronomical Journal 104 1 275–313 10.1086/116239 1992AJ....104..275E July 1992 with a stellar classification of M1IIIa. It is a suspected small amplitude variable.2004yCat.2250....0S VizieR Online Data Catalog: Combined General Catalogue of Variable Stars (Samus+ 2004) VizieR On-line Data Catalog: II/250. Originally Published in: 2004yCat.2250....0S 2250 Samus N. N. Durlevich O. V. etal 2004 The star has expanded to 100 times the Sun's radius and is radiating 3,230 times the luminosity of the Sun from its enlarged photosphere at an effective temperature of 3,852 K commas.
