It was the club's 85th consecutive season in the top tier of Spanish football, and ran from 1 July 2015 to 30 June 2016. Under new manager Rafael Benítez, Real Madrid remained undefeated in the Spanish league (La Liga) until a 3–2 loss to Sevilla on matchday 11. During the tenure of Benítez, Real achieved lopsided wins both in La Liga and the Champions League, which included final scores of 6–0 vs Espanyol, 8–0 vs Malmö and 10–2 vs Rayo Vallecano. In the Copa del Rey round of 32, Real fielded an ineligible player, resulting in the team's controversial disqualification from the tournament. Benítez was relieved of his duties mid-season, following allegations of unpopularity with supporters, displeasure from players and a failure to get good results against top teams.http://www.realmadrid.com/en/news/2016/01/zidane-a-club-legend-in-the-real-madrid-dugout Zidane: a club legend in the Real Madrid dugout realmadrid.com 4 January 2016 4 January 2016 Benítez's departure was announced along with the promotion of Zinedine Zidane to his first head coaching role.https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/0229-0e930f484246-2c717a89d01b-1000--zidane-replaces-benitez-at-real-madrid/ Zidane replaces Benítez at Real Madrid UEFA 5 January 2016 Under Zidane, Real won the Champions League and recorded a 12-game winning streak to conclude their league campaign.http://www.skysports.com/la-liga-table/2015 Sky Sports 2015–16 La Liga Table 8 June 2016 15 June 2017http://www.realmadrid.com/en/news/2016/05/1-1-la-undecima-is-ours 1–1: La Undécima is ours Real Madrid 28 May 2016https://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/news/022d-0e957c5979eb-37493cb53cd0-1000--spot-on-real-madrid-defeat-atletico-in-final-again/ Spot-on Real Madrid defeat Atlético in final again 28 May 2016 UEFAReal Madrid 2015/16 Season Review: Real Madrid 2015/16 Season Review: The 2015–16 season was the first season since 1998–99 to not feature goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who left Real after 16 years to sign with Porto.
