The club competed in Division Four, as well as the League Cup and FA Cup. Summary In October, with Hereford 12th in the table, manager Mike Bailey left to become head coach at Charlton Athletic, and player-coach Bobby Gould also departed to become assistant manager at Chelsea alongside Geoff Hurst. On the playing side, the team had already been weakened by the sale of Steve Emery to First Division Derby County for a club record transfer fee of £100,000. Frank Lord arrived from South African club Cape Town City to fill the vacant managerial role but was unable to reverse Hereford's declining fortunes. Despite having won their opening three league matches of the season under Bailey, they eventually finished in 21st place and were therefore forced to apply for re-election to the Football League for the first time.Parrott 1998 55–59 Squad Players who made one appearance or more for Hereford United F.C. during the 1979-80 season Pos.Nat.NameLeagueLeague CupFA CupTotalAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsAppsGoalsGKSCOTommy Hughes4602020500DFENGDanny Bartley1100000110DFENGPhil Burrows4210020441DFWALStuart Cornes16(1)2000016(1)2DFENGSteve Emery61200081DFENGAndy Feeley2532020293DFENGPaul Hunt24(2)3000024(2)3DFENGJohn Layton33(2)0212137(2)2DFWALJulian Marshall2312020271DFENGChris Price4201020450DFENGValmore Thomas1102000130MFENGAlan Birchenall110000(1)011(1)0MFSCODave Cunningham28(2)2002030(2)2MFENGPaul Gilchrist1110000111MFNIRJimmy Harvey (on loan from Arsenal)1100000110MFSCOIan Hendry60100070MFWALKyle Holmes2(1)000002(1)0MFENGPeter Spiring32(4)1202036(4)1MFENGKenny Stephens5(1)000005(1)0MFENGWinston White30(4)2212034(4)3FWENGFred Binney1940000194FWENGBobby Gould3(2)01(1)0004(3)0FWWALDave Jones19(2)3101021(2)3FWSCOFrank McGrellis39(2)10202143(2)11FWWALPaul Morris1(1)100001(1)1FWENGStewart Phillips10(1)20(1)01011(2)2 Parrott 1998 215Rothmans 1980-81 193–194 League table Fourth Division y HER Results Fourth Division 1979–80 Football League 1 18 August 1979 Hereford United 3–1 W York City McGrellis 11 44Jones 57 Randall 31 Edgar Street Hereford 3,149 2 20 August 1979 Port Vale 0–1 W Hereford United Feeley 42 Vale Park Stoke-on-Trent 2,744 3 25 August 1979 Hereford United 1–0 W Darlington McGrellis 31 Edgar Street Hereford 4,031 4 1 September 1979 Walsall 3–2 L Hereford United Buckley 7 16 pen.Serella 78 Feeley 4Emery 25 Fellows Park Walsall 4,527 5 8 September 1979 Hereford United 1–2 L Tranmere Rovers White 17 Craven 38Lumby 50 Edgar Street Hereford 3,812 6 15 September 1979 Halifax Town 1–0 L Hereford United Mountford 30 The Shay Halifax 1,500 7 19 September 1979 Torquay United 1–1 D Hereford United Smith 54 Hunt 29 Plainmoor Torquay 2,560 8 22 September 1979 Hereford United 2–1 W Wigan Athletic Hunt 53Phillips 79 Wright 46 Edgar Street Hereford 3,891 9 29 September 1979 Peterborough United 2–0 L Hereford United Kellock 25 pen.Chard 73 London Road Peterborough 4,051 10 3 October 1979 Hereford United 0–0 D Torquay United Edgar Street Hereford 3,062 11 5 October 1979 Stockport County 2–1 L Hereford United Henson 45Czuczman 87 Spiring 33 Edgeley Park Stockport 3,119 12 10 October 1979 Hereford United 0–0 D Port Vale Edgar Street Hereford 2,761 13 13 October 1979 Hereford United 2–0 W Crewe Alexandra McGrellis 4 47 Edgar Street Hereford 3,030 14 20 October 1979 Northampton Town 2–0 L Hereford United Farmer 29 52 County Ground Northampton 2,319 15 23 October 1979 Bournemouth 2–2 D Hereford United Chambers 32Butler 41 Cunningham 22McGrellis 25 Dean Court Bournemouth 2,838 16 27 October 1979 Hereford United 0–1 L Aldershot Brodie 63 Edgar Street Hereford 2,939 17 3 November 1979 York City 3–1 L Hereford United Lorimer 25Eccles 45Randall 65 McGrellis 51 Bootham Crescent York 2,226 18 7 November 1979 Hereford United 2–1 W Bournemouth Phillips 11McGrellis 53 MacDougall 58 Edgar Street Hereford 1,995 19 10 November 1979 Hartlepool United 3–0 L Hereford United Loadwick 20Newton 41 50 Victoria Park Hartlepool 2,281 20 17 November 1979 Hereford United 1–1 D Rochdale Feeley 28 Marshall 5 o.g.
