Heavy snowfall and bad weather forced organisers to shorten the race from 298 km 1 off to 246 km 1 off eliminating two key climbs – the Passo del Turchino and Le Manie – and arranging a bus transfer, for the race to begin a second time.http://road.cc/content/news/78614-milan-san-remo-snow-and-tv-schedules-wreak-havoc-race-shortened Simon MacMichael 17 March 2013 17 March 2013 Road.cc Farrelly Atkinson Snow and TV schedules wreak havoc as race shortened A few riders elected not to take the restart, including OPQ 2013's Tom Boonen, who protested against the decision to let all riders rejoin the main group, despite several riders having lost contact before the race was neutralised.
After Boonen's team-mate Sylvain Chavanel and SKY 2013 rider Ian Stannard had led a reduced peloton over the summit of the final climb, the Poggio di San Remo, a group of six formed on the descent from the Poggio, including pre-race favourites Peter Sagan (CAN 2013) and 2008 winner Fabian Cancellara of RLT 2013. The sextet remained together until the finish, where Gerald Ciolek prevailed in the sprint for MTN 2013, ahead of Sagan and Cancellara.http://www.cyclingnews.com/milan-san-remo/results 17 March 2013 17 March 2013 Cyclingnews.com Future plc Gerald Ciolek wins Milan-San Remo dead https://web.archive.org/web/20130320160139/http://www.cyclingnews.com/milan-san-remo/results 20 March 2013 http://www.velonation.com/News/ID/14156/Milano-Sanremo-Gerald-Ciolek-edges-out-Peter-Sagan-in-breakaway-sprint.aspx Ben Atkins 17 March 2013 17 March 2013 VeloNation VeloNation LLC Gerald Ciolek edges out Peter Sagan in breakaway sprint
