They were in the bottom four from mid-October onwards, and eventually finished in 19th position in the 22-team division, one place above the relegation places. They entered the 1975–76 FA Cup at the third round proper and lost to Portsmouth in that round after a replay, and lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third round of the League Cup. To celebrate the centenary of the club's foundation in 1875, they played a friendly match against Celtic, winning 1–0. Twenty-seven players made at least one first-team appearance, and there were thirteen different goalscorers. Defender Joe Gallagher missed only one of the 46 competitive matches played over the season, and Trevor Francis was the club's leading scorer with 18 goals, all but one scored in the league. Keith Coombs took over the chairmanship following the death of his father Clifford.Matthews (1995), Complete Record, p.44.Mr William Collingwood The Times London 4 July 1975 16 Football League First Division DateLeaguepositionOpponentsVenueResultScoreF–AScorersAttendance16 August 197511thLeicester CityAD3–3Hatton, Kendall 2 (1 pen)25,54719 August 197514thManchester UnitedH L0–233,17723 August 197519thEvertonHL0–126,81426 August 197521stMiddlesbroughAL0–222,42330 August 197521stIpswich TownAL2–4Hatton 222,6596 September 197521stQueens Park RangersHD1–1Kendall27,30513 September 197521stWolverhampton WanderersAL0–225,14220 September 197521stBurnleyHW4–0Campbell, Withe, Kendall, Francis25,83023 September 197517thNewcastle UnitedHW3–2Withe 2, Francis pen31,16627 September 197518thAston VillaAL1–2Francis53,7824 October 197517thSheffield UnitedHW2–0Hatton, Francis26,12111 October 197519thLiverpoolAL1–3Hatton36,53218 October 197519thLeeds UnitedHD2–2Francis, Gallagher33,77525 October 197519thNorwich CityAL0–119,6051 November 197520thWest Ham UnitedHL1–5Francis28,4748 November 197521stManchester CityAL0–228,32915 November 197521stArsenalHW3–1Francis pen, Withe, Hatton21,65222 November 197521stLeeds UnitedAL0–326,64029 November 197521stCoventry CityAL2–3Burns, Kendall pen21,8006 December 197519thDerby CountyHW2–1Burns, Page30,62013 December 197521stEvertonAL2–5Kendall, Withe20,18820 December 197519thLeicester CityHW2–1Francis pen, Withe21,89026 December 197519thTottenham HotspurAW3–1Francis 2, Withe21,65127 December 197519thStoke CityHD1–1Hatton37,16610 January 197619thWolverhampton WanderersHL0–128,55217 January 197619thQueens Park RangersAL1–2Francis16,75931 January 197620thManchester UnitedAL1–3Withe50,2747 February 197619thMiddlesbroughHW2–1Kendall, Hatton18,59914 February 197619thManchester CityHW2–1Gallagher, Kendall22,44521 February 197619thArsenalAL0–120,90728 February 197619thNorwich CityHD1–1Francis pen22,3596 March 197619thWest Ham UnitedAW2–1Withe, Emmanuel19,86313 March 197619thLiverpoolHL0–131,79720 March 197619thCoventry CityHD1–1Francis pen22,95627 March 197619thDerby CountyAL2–4Francis, Needham28,1613 April 197619thAston VillaHW3–2Hibbitt, Burns, Francis46,2517 April 197619thNewcastle UnitedAL0–418,90010 April 197620thBurnleyAL0–113,67913 April 197619thIpswich TownHW3–0Francis pen, Hibbitt, Burns20,49717 April 197619thTottenham HotspurHW3–1Gallagher, Francis, Burns30,61619 April 197619thStoke CityAL0–119,9284 May 197619thSheffield UnitedAD1–1Hibbitt30,782 League table (part) +Final First Division table (part)http://www.statto.com/football/teams/birmingham-city/1975-1976/table Birmingham City 1975–1976 : English Division One (old) Table Statto Organisation 18 February 2012 live https://web.archive.org/web/20160304062453/http://www.statto.com/football/teams/birmingham-city/1975-1976/table 4 March 2016 PosClubPldWDLFAGAPts17thArsenal4213101947530.893618thWest Ham United4213101948710.683619thBirmingham City421372257750.763320thWolverhampton Wanderers4210102251680.753021stBurnley429102343660.6528KeyPos = League position; Pld = Matches played;W = Matches won; D = Matches drawn; L = Matches lost;F = Goals for; A = Goals against; GA = Goal average; Pts = Points FA Cup 1975–76 FA Cup RoundDateOpponentsVenueResultScoreF–AScorersAttendanceThird round3 January 1976PortsmouthAD1–1Francis19,414Third round replay6 January 1976PortsmouthHL0–126,106 League Cup 1975–76 Football League Cup RoundDateOpponentsVenueResultScoreF–AScorersAttendanceSecond round9 September 1975OrientHW4–0Gallagher, Morton, Hatton, Want18,238Third round7 October 1975Wolverhampton WanderersHL0–229,822 Centenary match DateOpponentsVenueResultScoreF–AScorersAttendance25 November 1975CelticHW1–0Withe14,670 Appearances and goals Numbers in parentheses denote appearances made as a substitute.
