Teams representing 35 countries participated in several levels of competition, with an additional two national teams failing to advance from a mid-season preliminary qualifying tournament. The competition also served as qualifications for group placements in the 1995 competition. The top Championship Group A tournament took place in Italy from 25 April to 8 May 1994, with games played in Bolzano, Canazei and Milan. Twelve teams took part, with the first round being split into two groups of six, with the four best teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. Canada beat Finland in a shootout to capture gold for the first time since 1961. This was Canada's 20th world title in ice hockey. Great Britain returned to Group A for the first time since 1962, but failed to even earn a point. Slovakia, Belarus, Croatia, and Estonia all debuted in Group C, the Slovaks winning the top group, the Estonians winning the bottom group that would be called Group D in two years.Duplacey page 508 World Championship Group A (Italy) First round Group 1 main WDL QR 2 CAN CAN RUS RUS ITA ITA AUT AUT GER GER GBR GBR 5 0 0 24 07 4 0 1 30 07 3 0 2 17 15 1 1 3 15 15 1 1 3 09 14 0 0 5 07 44 #ccffcc A A A A red1 R complete #eeeeee 25 April ITA 1–4 CAN Bolzano #eeeeee 25 April AUT 2–2 GER Bolzano #eeeeee 26 April GBR 3–12 RUS Bolzano #eeeeee 26 April CAN 6–1 AUT Bolzano #eeeeee 27 April GBR 0–4 GER Bolzano #eeeeee 27 April ITA 0–7 RUS Bolzano #eeeeee 28 April CAN 3–2 GER Bolzano #eeeeee 29 April AUT 1–4 RUS Bolzano #eeeeee 29 April ITA 10–2 GBR Bolzano #eeeeee 30 April GER 0–6 RUS Bolzano #eeeeee 30 April CAN 8–2 GBR Bolzano #eeeeee 1 May ITA 3–1 AUT Bolzano #eeeeee 2 May ITA 3–1 GER Bolzano #eeeeee 2 May RUS 1–3 CAN Bolzano #eeeeee 3 May GBR 0–10 AUT Bolzano Group 2 main WDL QR 2 FIN FIN SWE SWE USA USA CZE CZE FRA FRA NOR NOR 4 1 0 29 11 3 1 1 22 11 3 0 2 21 19 1 2 2 15 17 1 0 4 08 25 0 2 3 09 21 #ccffcc A A A A red1 R complete #eeeeee 25 April SWE 3–3 NOR Canazei #eeeeee 25 April FIN 4–4 CZE Canazei #eeeeee 25 April FRA 1–5 USA Canazei #eeeeee 26 April CZE 5–2 FRA Canazei #eeeeee 27 April USA 7–2 NOR Canazei #eeeeee 27 April SWE 3–5 FIN Canazei #eeeeee 28 April CZE 3–5 USA Canazei #eeeeee 28 April FRA 0–6 SWE Canazei #eeeeee 29 April NOR 1–5 FIN Canazei #eeeeee 30 April FRA 1–8 FIN Canazei #eeeeee 30 April CZE 2–2 NOR Canazei #eeeeee 30 April USA 2–6 SWE Canazei #eeeeee 2 May NOR 1–4 FRA Canazei #eeeeee 2 May USA 2–7 FIN Canazei American Bill Lindsay tested positive for efedrin so official records indicate a final score of 7–0, however they also still add the two goals into the team totals.Podneiks p. 157 #eeeeee 2 May SWE 4–1 CZE Canazei Playoff round N8 yes high yes Quarterfinals Semifinals Final Third place 5 May FIN 10 AUT 0 5 May RUS 1 USA 3 5 May SWE 7 ITA 2 5 May CAN 3 CZE 2 7 May FIN 8 USA 0 7 May SWE 0 CAN 6 8 May FIN 1 CAN (GWS) 2 8 May SWE 7 USA 2 Quarterfinals #eeeeee 5 May RUS 1–3 USA Milan #eeeeee 5 May SWE 7–2 ITA Milan #eeeeee 5 May CAN 3–2 CZE Milan #eeeeee 5 May FIN 10–0 AUT Milan Consolation round 11–12 place 6 May GBR NOR 2–5 0–10–21–22–22–32–42–5 Ian Cooper – 28:09Richard Fera – 36:38 13:22 – Geir Hoff15:56 – Anders Myrvold52:13 – Morten Finstad52:46 – Espen Knutsen53:51 – Jörgen Salsten USA Daniel Murphy Bolzano #eeeeee Semifinals #eeeeee 7 May FIN 8–0 USA Milan #eeeeee 7 May SWE 0–6 CAN Milan Match for third place #eeeeee 8 May SWE 7–2 USA Milan Final 8 May 20:00 FIN CAN 1–2 (GWS) (0–0, 0–0, 1–1) 1–01–1 Esa Keskinen – 46:51 55:17 − Rod Brind’Amour SVK Danko USA Burt RUS Karabanov Milan #F7F6A8 World Championship Group B (Denmark) Played in Copenhagen and Aalborg 7–17 April. The hosts, shortly after losing in the quarterfinals of the Olympics, were expected to have a relatively easy time playing in Group C. However, all three former Soviet republics gave them very tough games, and prevailing by a single goal in the final game sealed their victory. North Korea was supposed to be the eighth team in this tournament, but did not participate.Tournament summary at Passionhockey.com main WDL Q 2 21 SVK SVK BLR BLR 1991 UKR UKR KAZ KAZ SVN SVN HUN HUN BUL BUL 4 2 0 43 03 5 0 1 35 11 3 2 1 49 07 3 2 1 52 12 2 0 4 26 27 1 0 5 14 47 0 0 6 03 115 #ccffcc A complete Slovakia was promoted to Group B while absent North Korea was relegated to Group C2 #eeeeee 18 March SVK 20–0 BUL #eeeeee 18 March BLR 1991 4–2 UKR #eeeeee 18 March SVN 8–2 HUN #eeeeee 19 March BLR 1991 13–1 BUL #eeeeee 19 March KAZ 14–5 HUN #eeeeee 19 March SVK 9–0 SVN #eeeeee 21 March BLR 1991 6–3 SVN #eeeeee 21 March UKR 8–0 HUN #eeeeee 21 March SVK 0–0 KAZ #eeeeee 22 March BLR 1991 6–3 KAZ #eeeeee 22 March HUN 7–2 BUL #eeeeee 22 March SVK 2–2 UKR #eeeeee 24 March SVN 13–0 BUL #eeeeee 24 March UKR 0–0 KAZ #eeeeee 24 March SVK 10–0 HUN #eeeeee 25 March KAZ 31–0 BUL #eeeeee 25 March BLR 1991 5–0 HUN #eeeeee 25 March UKR 6–1 SVN #eeeeee 27 March UKR 31–0 BUL #eeeeee 27 March SVK 2–1 BLR 1991 #eeeeee 27 March KAZ 4–1 SVN World Championship Group C2 (Spain) Qualifying round Played in November 1993.
