Barnsley council leader Jeff Ennis held the seat for Labour on an increased majority of 68% and more than three quarters of the votes, despite a low voter turnout. Despite a slight reduction in the vote for the Liberal Democrats, they overtook the Conservative Party for second place. The Socialist Labour Party, on their leader Arthur Scargill's home territory, was able to save its deposit. As a result of Labour's hold, the Conservative government fell into minority status, losing the majority the party had held for seventeen years.1996-12-13 The Major minority https://www.independent.co.uk/news/the-major-minority-1314246.html 2026-08-13 The Independent en Barnsley East by-election, 1996http://www.election.demon.co.uk/by1992.html Results of Byelections in the 1992-97 Parliament Boothroyd David 2015-10-01 United Kingdom Election Results 2017-07-20 https://web.archive.org/web/20170720031954/http://www.election.demon.co.uk/by1992.html dead Labour Party (UK) Jeff Ennis 13,683 76.4 −0.8 Liberal Democrats (UK) David Willis 1,502 8.4 −0.2 Conservative Party (UK) Jane Ellison 1,299 7.3 −6.9 Socialist Labour Party (UK) Ken Capstick 949 5.3 New UK Independence Party Nikolai Tolstoy 378 2.1 New Socialist Equality Party (UK) Julie Hyland 89 0.5 New 12,181 68.0 +5.0 17,900 33.7 -39.0 Labour Party (UK) General election 1992: Barnsley East Labour Party (UK) Terry Patchett 30,346 77.2 +2.7 Conservative Party (UK) John Proctor 5,569 14.2 +0.2 Liberal Democrats (UK) Sylvia Anginotti 3,399 8.6 −2.9 24,777 63.0 +2.5 39,314 72.7 +0.1 Labour Party (UK) +1.3 References Barnsley East by-election Barnsley East by-election Category:By-elections to the Parliament of the United Kingdom in South Yorkshire constituencies Category:Elections in Barnsley Category:1990s in South Yorkshire Barnsley East by-election
