Led by first-year head coach Mike Warren, a UCSB alum, the Gauchos compiled a record of 4–5 and were outscored by their opponents 163 to 158 for the season. The team played home games at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, California. This was the first year since the program had disbanded after the 1971 season that UC Santa Barbara participated in football sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). From 1983 to 1985, a student-run club team competed, but games played during those years are not considered in NCAA records.Starting Over, UCSB Doesn't Do It Old Way The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California September 16, 1986 III-6 Allan Drooz https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16431283/starting_over_ucsb_doesnt_do_it_old_way/ Newspapers.com January 10, 2018 Schedule September 13 w y 1986 Redlands Bulldogs Redlands Redlands Stadium Redlands, CA 28–2 1,357 Southland The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California September 14, 1986 III-19 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10004632/southland_19860914/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 September 20 l y Humboldt State Redwood Bowl Arcata, CA 7–27 5,000 Saturday's Late Results The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California September 22, 1986 III-19 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007138/saturdays_late_results/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 September 27 w 1986 Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens Pomona-Pitzer Harder Stadium Santa Barbara, CA 28–15 2,749–3,749 Southland The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California September 28, 1986 III-19 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007230/southland_19860928/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 October 4 l 1986 Whittier Poets Whittier Harder Stadium Santa Barbara, CA 13–20 4,991 Southland The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California October 5, 1986 III-18 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007424/southland_19861005/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 October 11 l 1986 Saint Mary's Gaels Saint Mary’s Harder Stadium Santa Barbara, CA 9–14 1,851 Southland The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California October 12, 1986 III-19 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007487/far_west_19861012/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 October 18 l 1986 Claremont-Mudd Stags Claremont-Mudd Harder Stadium Santa Barbara, CA 13–16 1,118 October 25 w y 1986 San Diego Toreros San Diego Torero Stadium San Diego, CA 14–8 1,300 Southland Summaries The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California October 26, 1986 III-20 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007631/southland_summaries_19861025/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 November 8 w y 1986 Azusa Pacific Cougars Azusa Pacific Cougar Athletic Stadium Azusa, CA 17–14 2,204 Southland Summaries The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California November 9, 1986 III-20 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007902/southland_summaries_19861109/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 November 15 l y Sonoma State Harder Stadium Santa Barbara, CA 29–47 8,815 Southland Summaries The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California November 16, 1986 III-18 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/10007981/southland_summaries_19861116/ Newspapers.com April 2, 2017 College Football Log The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California September 16, 1986 III-6 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16431259/football_log_ucsb_860916/ Newspapers.com January 10, 2018College Football Log The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California November 11, 1986 III-4 https://www.newspapers.com/clip/16431813/football_log_ucsb_861111/ Newspapers.com January 10, 2018 Final 1986 Division III Cumulative Football Statistics Report (UC Santa Barbara) https://stats.ncaa.org/team/104/stats/13493 National Collegiate Athletic Association December 20, 2022 References UC Santa Barbara Category:UC Santa Barbara Gauchos football seasons UC Santa Barbara Gauchos football
