Presiding over this joint session was the House speaker, Dennis Hastert, accompanied by Al Gore, the vice president, in his capacity as the president of the Senate. Clinton began the speech by saying, "We are fortunate to be alive at this moment in history. Never before has our nation enjoyed, at once, so much prosperity and social progress with so little internal crisis or so few external threats. Never before have we had such a blessed opportunity and, therefore, such a profound obligation to build the more perfect union of our founders' dreams." Clinton discussed many topics in the address, including education, health care, crime, the global economy, technology, and the environment.https://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/white_house/jan-june00/sotu00.html Online NewsHour: State of the Union, January 27, 2000 PBS August 23, 2017 November 3, 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20131103195231/http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/white_house/jan-june00/sotu00.html dead At the time, it was the longest State of the Union address in recorded history at 1 hour, 28 minutes, and 49 seconds until it was surpassed by the 2026 State of the Union Address by Donald Trump that lasted 1 hour, 47 minutes, and 40 seconds. This State of the Union address is notable for being the first since President Reagan's 1986 address at which all 9 members of the Supreme Court were absent. It is speculated that their absence was due to Clinton's recent impeachment.http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/28/clinton/index.html Bill Clinton - Salon.com January 29, 2010 November 13, 2009 https://web.archive.org/web/20091113062023/http://www.salon.com/politics2000/feature/2000/01/28/clinton/index.html dead Bill Richardson, the Secretary of Energy, served as the designated survivor.Keneally Meghan https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/tales-past-designated-survivors-miss-state-union/story?id=52681358 February 5, 2019 Tales from past 'designated survivors' who had to miss the State of the Union ABC News See also 2000 United States presidential election References External links Bill Clinton's Eighth State of the Union Address 2000 State of the Union Address House of Representatives January 27, 2000 Congressional Record United States Government Publishing Office Washington, DC 146 4 H29–H35 https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/CREC-2000-01-27/pdf/CREC-2000-01-27-house.pdf August 19, 2024 2000 State of the Union Address January 27, 2000 C-SPAN https://www.c-span.org/video/?154326-1/2000-state-union-address August 19, 2024 State of the Union Response January 27, 2000 C-SPAN https://www.c-span.org/video/?154984-1/state-union-response August 19, 2024 Entire 2000 State of the Union Response (transcript) 1999 State of the Union Address 2001 joint session speech State of the Union addresses 1 2000 State of the Union Address 2000 State of the Union Address State of the Union Address State of the Union Address State of the Union Address State of the Union Address Category:Dennis Hastert Category:Presidency of Bill Clinton Category:Speeches by Bill Clinton Category:Articles containing video clips Category:2000s State of the Union addresses
