Samuel Sánchez caught Chris Horner at the top of the Alto de Usartza climb and then dived down the short descent to the finish to win by two seconds. Alejandro Valverde and Robert Gesink also caught Chris Horner who barely managed to stay with them. The victory put Alejandro Valverde only one second ahead of Chris Horner and Robert Gesink respectively. The overall favourites knew they had to wait for the Alto de Usartza, that ended just two kilometres from the finish. Samuel Sánchez's victory was EUS 2010's first victory of the 2010 cycling year as well.Cycling News http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/vuelta-ciclista-al-pais-vasco-upt/stage-4/results Sanchez wins hilly stage in Pais Vasco 2010-04-08 Cycling News Future Publishing Limited 2010-04-08 https://web.archive.org/web/20100410235753/http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/vuelta-ciclista-al-pais-vasco-upt/stage-4/results 10 April 2010 live Stage 4 Results CyclistTeamTime 1Samuel Sánchez ESPEUS 2010 4h 05' 16" 2 Alejandro Valverde ESPGCE 2010 + 2" 3 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 + 2" 4 Chris Horner USARSH 2010 + 2" 5Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 33" 6 Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 33" 7 Damiano Cunego ITALAM 2010 + 40" 8 Andy Schleck LUXSAX 2010 + 40" 9 Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 49" 10 Joaquim Rodríguez ESPKAT 2010 + 49"General classification after Stage 4 CyclistTeamTime 1 Alejandro Valverde ESP 20px 20pxGCE 2010 18h 46' 50" 2 Chris Horner USARSH 2010 + 1" 3 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 + 1" 4Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 32" 5 Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 32" 6 Damiano Cunego ITALAM 2010 + 39" 7 Andy Schleck LUXSAX 2010 + 39" 8 Marco Pinotti ITATHR 2010 + 48" 9 Joaquim Rodríguez ESPKAT 2010 + 48" 10 Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 48" Stage 5 9 April 2010 – Eibar to Orio, 170 km on Joaquim Rodríguez soloed across the finish line, taking 14 seconds off of race leader Alejandro Valverde and put him comfortably in 3rd place. 2008 Champion Samuel Sánchez came in 2nd place, just ahead of race leader Alejandro Valverde. A large attack group including mountains classification leader Amets Txurruka spent much of the day ahead of the peloton. On the penultimate climb Txurruka attacked solo, but crashed on the descent towards the final climb. He was able to complete the stage, but broke his collarbone in the incident and had to drop out before the final time trial. Robert Gesink who was in 3rd place after the previous stage, is now in 8th place after experiencing a crash on the final climb. His team (Rabobank) reported that he may have broken a bone in his hand. Joaquim Rodríguez had attacked out of the chasing peloton with about 20 km to go, passing the remnants of an earlier escape group. He had come into the stage 48 seconds down on the general ranking, dangerous enough for Valverde, Horner and Sánchez to give chase. Joaquim Rodríguez was happy with the result and the ITT is different than normal because it has a hilly finish. His dream is to take the GC.Cycling News http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/vuelta-ciclista-al-pais-vasco-upt/stage-5/results Rodriguez solos in for Katusha 2010-04-09 Cycling News Future Publishing Limited 2010-04-09 https://web.archive.org/web/20100412023810/http://www.cyclingnews.com/races/vuelta-ciclista-al-pais-vasco-upt/stage-5/results 12 April 2010 live Stage 5 Results CyclistTeamTime 1Joaquim Rodríguez ESPKAT 2010 4h 07' 52" 2 Samuel Sánchez ESP EUS 2010 + 14" 3 Alejandro Valverde ESP20px 20px GCE 2010 + 14" 4 Chris Horner USARSH 2010 + 14" 5Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 20" 6 Francesco Gavazzi ITALAM 2010 + 20" 7 Ryder Hesjedal CANGRM 2010 + 20" 8 Dries Devenyns BELQST 2010 + 20" 9 Jurgen Van den Broeck BELOLO 2010 + 20" 10 Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 20"General classification after Stage 5 CyclistTeamTime 1 Alejandro Valverde ESP 20px 20pxGCE 2010 22h 54' 56" 2 Chris Horner USARSH 2010 + 1" 3 Joaquim Rodríguez ESP KAT 2010 + 34" 4Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 38" 5 Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 38" 6 Andy Schleck LUXSAX 2010 + 45" 7 Marco Pinotti ITATHR 2010 + 54" 8 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 + 54" 9 Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 54" 10 Dries Devenyns BELQST 2010 + 1' 16" Stage 6 10 April 2010 – Orio to Orio, 22 km on (Individual Time Trial) Stage 6 Results CyclistTeamTime 1 Chris Horner USARSH 2010 32' 33" 2 Alejandro Valverde ESP20px 20px GCE 2010 + 8" 3 Maxime Monfort BELTHR 2010 + 13" 4 Michael Rogers AUSTHR 2010 + 18" 5 Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 21" 6 Samuel Sánchez ESP EUS 2010 + 23" 7 Marco Pinotti ITATHR 2010 + 25" 8Joaquim Rodríguez ESPKAT 2010 + 33" 9 Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 33" 10 Andreas Klöden GERRSH 2010 + 34""General classification after Stage 6 CyclistTeamTime 1 Chris Horner USA 20pxRSH 2010 23h 27' 30" 2 Alejandro Valverde ESP 20pxGCE 2010 + 7" 3 Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 58" 4 Joaquim Rodríguez ESP KAT 2010 + 1' 06" 5Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 1' 10" 6 Marco Pinotti ITATHR 2010 + 1' 18" 7 Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 1' 47" 8 Samuel Sánchez ESP EUS 2010 + 1' 58" 9 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 + 1' 59" 10 Dries Devenyns BELQST 2010 + 2' 27" Classification Leadership Stage WinnerGeneral classification25px|link=|alt=Points Classification25px|link=|alt=Mountains Classification25px|link=|alt=Sprints Classification25px|link=|alt=Team Classification 1 Alejandro ValverdeÓscar Freire Alejandro ValverdeÓscar Freire Alejandro ValverdeÓscar Freire Gonzalo Rabuñal Christian Meier RSH 2010 2 Alejandro ValverdeÓscar Freire 3 Francesco Gavazzi Óscar Freire Óscar Freire 4 Samuel Sánchez Alejandro ValverdeChris Horner Alejandro ValverdeSamuel Sánchez Amets Txurruka 5 Joaquim Rodríguez 6 Chris Horner Chris Horner Gonzalo Rabuñal THR 2010 Final Chris Horner Alejandro ValverdeSamuel Sánchez Gonzalo Rabuñal Christian Meier THR 2010 Final results General classification RiderTeamTime 1 Chris Horner USA 20pxRSH 2010 23h 27' 30" 2 Beñat Intxausti ESPEUS 2010 + 58" 3 Joaquim Rodríguez ESP KAT 2010 + 1' 06" 4Jean-Christophe Péraud FRAOLO 2010 + 1' 10" 5 Marco Pinotti ITATHR 2010 + 1' 18" 6 Sandy Casar FRAFDJ 2010 + 1' 47" 7 Samuel Sánchez ESP20px EUS 2010 + 1' 58" 8 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 + 1' 59" 9 Dries Devenyns BELQST 2010 + 2' 27" 10 Jurgen Van den Broeck BEL OLO 2010 + 2' 37" Points Classification RiderTeamPoints 1 Samuel Sánchez ESP20px EUS 2010 79 3 Óscar Freire ESP RAB 2010 60 4 Chris Horner USA20px RSH 2010 53 5 Francesco Gavazzi ITA LAM 2010 51 6 Joaquim Rodríguez ESP KAT 2010 46 7 Beñat Intxausti ESP EUS 2010 34 8 Ryder Hesjedal CAN GRM 2010 33 9 Sandy Casar FRA FDJ 2010 26 10 Jean-Christophe Péraud FRA OLO 2010 24 Mountains Classification RiderTeamPoints 1 Gonzalo Rabuñal ESP 20pxXAC 2010 23 2 José Alberto Benítez ESPFUJ 2010 19 3 Michael Albasini SUITHR 2010 16 4 Jakob Fuglsang DEN SAX 2010 16 5Johannes Fröhlinger GERMRM 2010 14 6 Chris Horner USA20pxRSH 2010 13 7 Michael Rogers AUSTHR 2010 12 8 Ivan Santaromita ITA LIQ 2010 11 9 Robert Gesink NEDRAB 2010 9 10 Joaquim Rodríguez ESPKAT 2010 8 Sprints Classification RiderTeamPoints 1 Christian Meier CAN20px GRM 2010 14 2 Jakob Fuglsang DEN SAX 2010 9 3 Egoi Martínez ESP EUS 2010 9 4 Michael Albasini SUI THR 2010 9 5 Serguei Klimov RUS KAT 2010 8 6 Iban Mayoz ESP EUS 2010 4 7 Michael Rogers AUS THR 2010 4 8 Dmitriy Fofonov KAZ AST 2010 3 9 Rémy Di Gregorio FRA FDJ 2010 3 10 Ryder Hesjedal CAN GRM 2010 2 Team classification Pos.TeamTime1 THR 2010 70h 28′ 40″2RSH 2010 + 17″3EUS 2010 + 2′ 14″4GCE 2010 + 6′ 09″5KAT 2010 + 14′ 32″6FDJ 2010 + 18′ 08″7RAB 2010 + 20′ 44″8OLO 2010 + 21′ 43″9QST 2010 + 23′ 29″10SAX 2010 + 24′ 17″ See also 2010 in road cycling UCI Pro Tour References 2010 Category:2010 UCI ProTour Category:2010 in Spanish road cycling Tour of the Basque Country Category:2010 in the Basque Country (autonomous community) Category:April 2010 sports events in Europe
