The team's head coach was Sonny Smith, who was in his seventh season at Auburn. Smith and the Tigers had to deal with the losses of center Charles Barkley (left for NBA) and forward Greg Turner (graduated). However, a stellar recruiting class of five freshman, including forward Chris Morris, centers Jeff Moore and Darren Guest, and guards Johnny Lynn and Terrence Howard joined holdovers Chuck Person, Gerald White, and Frank Ford and matured and improved as the season progressed. The team played their home games at Memorial Coliseum in Auburn, Alabama. The Tigers finished the season 22–12, 8–10 in SEC play. They defeated Ole Miss, LSU, Florida, and Alabama to win the SEC tournament championship. They received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament where they defeated Purdue and Kansas to advance to the Sweet Sixteen where they lost to North Carolina.https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/auburn/1985-schedule.html 1984-85 Auburn Tigers Schedule and Results 9 December 2016 Roster 1984 Auburn Tigers y yes Chuck Person 45 F 6 8 JR y Brantley, AL Brantley High School Frank Ford basketball 15 G 6 4 So y Kissimmee, Florida Osceola High School Chris Morris basketball 34 F 6 7 Fr y Atlanta, Georgia Frederick Douglass High School Jeff Moore basketball 40 C 6 8 Fr y Midfield, Alabama Midfield High School Gerald White 12 G 6 1 So y Augusta, Georgia Richmond Academy Carey Holland 33 C 6 7 Sr y Baldwin, Florida Baldwin High School Terrence Howard 10 G 6 1 Fr y Southwest, Alabama Southwest, Alabama Darren Guest 32 C 6 9 Fr y Harvey, Illinois Thornton Township Johnny Lynn 14 G 6 3 Fr y Hendersonville, Tennessee Beech High School Gary Godfrey 25 F 6 7 Jr y North Palm Beach, Florida North Shore High School Sonny Smith (Milligan College) Schedule and results no yes |- !colspan=12 style=Auburn Tigers| Regular season |- 92-50 Nov 24, 1984 yes Stetson 1-0 Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 91-56 Nov ?, 1984 yes Columbus College 2-0 Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 61-59 Nov 30, 1984 ESPN yes UAB 3-0 Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Birmingham, AL yes 13 80-47 yes Armstrong State 4-0 Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL Dec ?, 1984 70-69 Dec 8, 1984 yes Mercer 5-0 Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 79-57 Dec 12, 1984 yes Radford 6-0 Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL Dec 21, 1984 yes yes VCU McKenzie Arena Chattanooga, TN Krystal Classic 59–78 6-1 95-63 Dec 22, 1984 yes yes Delaware Krystal Classic 7-1 McKenzie Arena Chattanooga, TN 59-58 Dec 29, 1984 yes yes West Virginia 8-1 WVU Coliseum Morgantown, WV 61-68 Jan 2, 1985 WTBS yes Kentucky 8-2 (0-1) Rupp Arena Lexington, KY 80-74 Jan 5, 1985 Florida 9-2 (1-1) Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 74-86 Jan 9, 1985 yes Tennessee 9-3 (1-2) Stokely Center Knoxville, TN 62-53 Jan 12, 1985 Mississippi State 10-3 (2-2) Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 55-60 Jan 16, 1985 Alabama 10-4 (2-3) Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 80-97 Jan 19, 1985 yes Georgia 10-5 (2-4) Stegeman Coliseum Athens, GA 93-73 Jan 24, 1985 USA 11-5 (3-4) Mississippi Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 62-80 Jan 26, 1985 yes LSU 11-6 (3-5) Maravich Assembly Center Baton Rouge, LA 86-80 Jan 30, 1985 yes Vanderbilt 12-6 (4-5) Memorial Gymnasium Nashville, TN 47-49 Feb 2, 1985 Kentucky OT 12-7 (4-6) Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum Auburn, AL 81-78 Feb 6, 1985 yes Florida 13-7 (5-6) Stephen C.
