Though they applied for UCI ProTour status after their formation, the team competed in 2009 as a UCI Professional Continental team with wildcard status. This means that although they were not automatically invited to UCI ProTour events, they were eligible to be invited. Despite not being a ProTour team, they effectively competed at the highest level available in the sport - seventeen of the twenty-four UCI World Ranking events invited the team, including all three Grand Tours. The team formed for the 2009 season after their title sponsor, Cervélo, was outbid to remain the bicycle frame sponsor of SBS 2009. The owners of the company wanted to remain at the highest level of pro cycling, and formed the TestTeam. The team's leader is 2008 Tour de France winner Carlos Sastre, who was one of the first riders to join the team. Cervélo TestTeam established itself as a strong classics team in its first year of existence, with three victories and seven other podium finishes in the spring season. The team was also prolific in winning individual stages in stage races, while they did not have an overall win in a stage race this season. The team's general manager is Thomas Campana, who the owners of Cervélo actively sought to lead the team in the weeks after its formation. 2009 roster Ages as of January 1, 2009Cervélo TestTeam Riders http://www.cervelo.com/riders.aspx Cervélo 2009-05-26 https://web.archive.org/web/20090528093912/http://www.cervelo.com/riders.aspx 28 May 2009 dead Íñigo Cuesta ESP 2009 1 1 1969 6 2 Philip Deignan IRL 2009 1 1 1983 9 7 Daniel Fleeman GBR 2009 1 1 1982 10 3 Xavier Florencio ESP 2009 1 1 1979 12 26 Simon Gerrans AUS 2009 1 1 1980 5 16 Volodymir Gustov UKR 2009 1 1 1977 2 15 Roger Hammond GBR 2009 1 1 1974 1 30 Heinrich Haussler GER 2009 1 1 1984 2 25 Jeremy Hunt GBR 2009 1 1 1974 3 12 Thor Hushovd NOR 2009 1 1 1978 1 18 Ted King USA 2009 1 1 1983 1 31 Andreas Klier GER 2009 1 1 1975 1 15 Ignatas Konovalovas LTU 2009 1 1 1985 12 8 Brett Lancaster AUS 2009 1 1 1979 11 15 Daniel Lloyd GBR 2009 1 1 1982 8 11 José Ángel Gómez Marchante ESP 2009 1 1 1980 5 30 Joaquin Novoa ESP 2009 1 1 1983 8 25 Serge Pauwels BEL 2009 1 1 1983 11 21 Oscar Pujol ESP 2009 1 1 1983 10 16 Gabriel Rasch NOR 2009 1 1 1976 4 8 Martin Reimer GER 2009 1 1 1987 6 14 Dominique Rollin CAN 2009 1 1 1982 10 29 Hayden Roulston NZL 2009 1 1 1981 1 10 Carlos Sastre ESP 2009 1 1 1975 4 22 Marcel Wyss SUI 2009 1 1 1986 6 25 Riders' 2008 teams 2008-10-27 Rider transfers for 2008–2009 http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road/2008/transfers08/riders CyclingNews 2009-07-22 https://web.archive.org/web/20090629030929/http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/road.php?id=road%2F2008%2Ftransfers08%2Friders 29 June 2009 live Rider2008 teamÍñigo CuestaSAX 2008bPhilip DeignanALM 2008Daniel FleemanAn Post–M Donnelly–Grant Thornton–Sean Kelly TeamXavier FlorencioBBO 2008Simon GerransC.A 2008Volodymir GustovSAX 2008bRoger HammondTHR 2008bHeinrich HausslerGST 2008Jeremy HuntC.A 2008Thor HushovdC.A 2008Ted KingBPC 2008Andreas KlierTHR 2008bIgnatas KonovalovasC.A 2008 Rider2008 teamBrett LancasterMRM 2008Daniel LloydAn Post–M Donnelly–Grant Thornton–Sean Kelly TeamJosé Ángel Gómez MarchanteFUJ 2008bJoaquin Novoaneo-proSerge PauwelsTSV 2008Oscar Pujolneo-proGabriel RaschC.A 2008Martin Reimerneo-proDominique RollinTUP 2008Hayden Roulstonex-pro (Health Net Pro Cycling Team, 2006)Carlos SastreSAX 2008bMarcel Wyssneo-pro Genesis of the new team The founding of Cervélo TestTeam was a direct reaction to Team CSC Saxo Bank switching to Specialized. The team is one of the most broadly international in professional cycling, with 13 nations represented by those 25 riders. At the first presentation of the team in Portugal, Vroomen also evoked legendary cyclist Fausto Coppi having ridden for a team sponsored by the bicycle industry (that sponsor being Bianchi Bicycles) as a motivation for sponsorship of the new team. On February 11, the team was one of thirteen assigned "Wild Card" status by the UCI, allowing the organizers of UCI ProTour events to select them to race in their event despite not having ProTour status as a team.Lucky 13 for wildcard teams http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=news/2009/feb09/feb11news First Edition Cycling News, February 11, 2009 Clarke, Les Cycling News 2009-02-11 2009-05-26 One-day races Spring classics left|thumb|Johan Vansummeren, Hushovd, and Leif Hoste as they approach the finish line of Paris–Roubaix inside the Roubaix velodrome.|alt=Three cyclists in a line on a racing track.
