Background
The Khyber Agency market bombing was recorded to be the first major terrorist attack in the country since September 2011 when a Taliban suicide bomber had killed 46 people at a funeral in Lower Dir, targeting anti-Taliban militia members. Khyber Agency has experienced heavy conflict due to constant cross-border movement of militants connected to the War in Afghanistan. It used to serve as the main NATO supply route to Afghanistan until the closure of all supply lines by Pakistan in the wake of a NATO-led attack on Pakistani military checkposts which resulted in the death of 24 Pakistani soldiers.
Attack
According to official sources, the remote-controlled device had been planted in a passenger pick-up van at a fuel station in the town near a vegetable market (bazaar). A local government administrator said the bombing may have been a reaction to a successful military operation underway in Khyber Agency against insurgents and that the possible target of the attack may have been people of the Zakhakhel tribe who had formed a lashkar (armed militia) against Tehrik-i-Taliban militants. The bombing had hallmarks similar to earlier attacks carried out by insurgent groups.
The injured were transported by ambulances to the Hayatabad Medical Complex, Khyber Teaching Hospital and Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar. The area was cordoned off by security agencies for investigation following the explosion. Funeral prayers were held for the dead soon after the attack.http://www.thenews.com.pk/TodaysPrintDetail.aspx?ID=11645&Cat=13 Khassadars among 30 killed in Jamrud blast 11 January 2012 The News International, Pakistan 6 November 2014 The authorities announced Rs. 100,000 compensation for the family of each deceased and Rs. 25,000 for each injured person.
Responsibility
A Taliban spokesman speaking via telephone from an undisclosed location denied that the Taliban had a role in the attack. Taliban spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan also disowned the attack in an email sent to the media. Local residents claimed that the nature of the bombing suggested that it was related more to a tribal dispute, since most of the victims of the blast were members of a tribe who opposed the notorious local warlord Mangal Bagh.https://archive.today/20120710090910/http://gulftoday.ae/portal/56551795-7777-4c2d-8095-998517d574bf.aspx Tribal dispute seen behind Jamrud blast
