Annual figure skating competition held in 2002 2002 World Figure Skating Championships ISU Championship March 16 24 2001–02 Nagano, Japan M-Wave RUS Alexei Yagudin RUS Irina Slutskaya CHN Shen Xue / Zhao Hongbo RUS Irina Lobacheva / Ilia Averbukh 2001 World Championships 2003 World Championships The 2002 World Figure Skating Championships were held at the M-Wave Arena in Nagano, Japan from March 16 to 24, sanctioned by the International Skating Union. Medals were awarded in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing. Neither pairs gold medalists chose to attend. Both went pro soon after. 2002 Worlds was the first time Israel had ever won a medal at Worlds. Due to the large number of participants, the men's and ladies' qualifying groups were split into groups A and B. The first compulsory dance was the Golden Waltz.
