The 1969 NBA draft was the 23rd annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 7 and May 7, 1969, before the 1969–70 season. In this draft, fourteen NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players. A player who had finished his four-year college eligibility was eligible for selection. If a player left college early, he would not be eligible for selection until his college class graduated.
The first two picks in the draft belonged to the teams that finished last in each division, with the order determined by a coin flip.http://www.nba.com/history/draft_evolution.html Evolution of the Draft and Lottery March 16, 2010 NBA.com Turner Sports Interactive, Inc https://web.archive.org/web/20100321141751/http://www.nba.com/history/draft_evolution.html 21 March 2010 dead The Milwaukee Bucks won the coin flip in the commissioner's New York office on March 19 and were awarded the first overall pick, while the Phoenix Suns went second.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=I5xRAAAAIBAJ&sjid=02wDAAAAIBAJ&pg=1219%2C3209208 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Associated Press Bucks flip – get Alcindor March 20, 1969 36https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=iyZUAAAAIBAJ&sjid=BDoNAAAAIBAJ&pg=5596%2C2484419 Lawrence Daily Journal-World Kansas Associated Press Bucks edge Suns in flip, on court March 20, 1969 18https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=OpYrAAAAIBAJ&sjid=yXoFAAAAIBAJ&pg=1097%2C4309957 Deseret News Salt Lake City, Utah UPI Hintz Gene W.
