Including the previous incarnations as the Home Nations and Five Nations, this was the 95th series of the northern hemisphere rugby union championship. Ten matches were played over five weekends between 21 January and 18 March. France won it with three wins and one defeat (against England), while none of the other four teams was able to win the Triple Crown. England entered the final round of matches knowing that a win would give them at least a share of the championship, but were overturned in Cardiff as Wales scored their only victory of the season. Scotland also could have taken the championship had they won in France - even a draw would have been enough, thanks to England's defeat - but France won the game to seal the title.Burke Andy 15 May 2020 Scotland v Ireland in 1989 Five Nations: Iwan Tukalo recalls hat-trick https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/52651389 24 February 2024 BBC SportPye Steven 20 March 2013 Remembering England's woe in Cardiff in the 1989 Five Nations https://www.theguardian.com/sport/that-1980s-sports-blog/2013/mar/20/remembering-england-cardiff-five-nations-1989 24 February 2024 The Guardian Participants The teams involved were: NationVenueCityHead coachCaptainENGTwickenhamLondonGeoff CookeWill CarlingFRA 1974Parc des PrincesParisJacques FourouxPierre BerbizierIRELansdowne RoadDublinJim DavidsonPhillip MatthewsSCOMurrayfieldEdinburghIan McGeechanFinlay CalderWALNational StadiumCardiffJohn RyanPaul Thorburn Squads each nation's squad for the 1989 Five Nations Championship 1989 Five Nations Championship squads Table main WDL Q points 2 FRA FRA 1974 ENG ENG SCO 2 SCO IRE IRE WAL 4 WAL 3 0 1 76 47 2 1 1 48 27 2 1 1 75 59 1 0 3 64 92 1 0 3 44 82 #ccffcc A complete Global Sports Archive Results 21 January 1989 IRE 21–26 FRA 1974 Mullin Kiernan Kiernan (5) BlancoLafondLagisquet (2) Lafond (2) Lafond (2) Lansdowne Road, Dublin 52,000 Brian Anderson (Scotland) 21 January 1989 SCO 23–7 WAL ArmstrongChalmersWhite Dods Dods (2) Chalmers Hall Bowen Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh Jean-Claude Doulcet (France) 4 February 1989 WAL 13–19 IRE Jones Thorburn (3) DeanMannion Kiernan Kiernan (3) Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff Roger Quittenton (England) 4 February 1989 ENG 12–12 SCO Andrew (2)Webb (2) Jeffrey Dods Dods (2) Twickenham Stadium, London Guy Maurette (France) This is the first draw in the Five Nations since 1985 (Ireland 15–15 France) This is the first draw between England and Scotland since 1982 England retained the Calcutta Cup 18 February 1989 FRA 1974 31–12 WAL BerbizierBlanco (2)Dintrans Lafond (3) Lafond (2) Mesnel Thorburn (4) Parc des Princes, Paris 50,370 Jim Fleming (Scotland) 18 February 1989 IRE 3–16 ENG Kiernan MooreRichards Andrew Andrew (2) Lansdowne Road, Dublin Les Peard (Wales) 4 March 1989 SCO 37–21 IRE CroninJeffreyTukalo (3) Dods (4) Dods (3) DunleaMullin (2) Kiernan (3) Kiernan Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh Kerry Fitzgerald (New Zealand) 4 March 1989 ENG 11–0 FRA 1974 CarlingRobinson Andrew Twickenham Stadium, London 62,500 Stephen Hilditch (Ireland) 18 March 1989 FRA 1974 19–3 SCO BerbizierBlancoLagisquet Bérot (2) Bérot Dods Parc des Princes, Paris 49,370 Owen Doyle (Ireland) 18 March 1989 WAL 12–9 ENG Hall Thorburn Thorburn (2) Andrew (2) Andrew Cardiff Arms Park, Cardiff Kerry Fitzgerald (New Zealand) References 1989 Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations Five Nations
