1986–87 UEFA Cup

16th season of Europe's secondary club football tournament organised by UEFA UEFA Cup 1986–87 16 September 1986 – 20 May 1987 64 SWE IFK Göteborg 2 SCO Dundee United 126 291 2502655 Peter Houtman (Groningen)Paulinho Cascavel (Vitória Guimarães)Jari Rantanen (IFK Göteborg)Wim Kieft (Torino)5 goals each 1985–86 1987–88 The 1986–87 UEFA Cup was the 16th season of the UEFA Cup, the third-tier club football competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The final was played over two legs at the Ullevi, Gothenburg, Sweden, and at Tannadice Park, Dundee, Scotland. The competition was won by IFK Göteborg of Sweden, who defeated Dundee United of Scotland by an aggregate result of 2–1 to claim their second title. This is the second and last European tournament won by a Swedish team, five years after Göteborg's first UEFA Cup conquest in 1982, as well as the last European final played by a Swedish team, while Dundee United became the last team from Scotland to reach a European final until 2003. This was the second season in which all English clubs were banned from European football competitions.http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=1986/overview/ 1986/87: IFK back on top 15 January 2017 12 February 2013 https://web.archive.org/web/20130212182657/http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=1986/overview/ dead http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/night-dundee-united-lost-won-10457923 The night Dundee United lost but won the hearts of the world 20 May 2017 Association team allocation A total of 64 teams from 31 UEFA member associations participated in the 1986–87 UEFA Cup, all entering from the first round over six knock-out rounds. The association ranking based on the UEFA country coefficients is used to determine the number of participating teams for each association: Associations 1–3 each have four teams qualify. Associations 4–8 each have three teams qualify. Associations 9–21 each have two teams qualify. Associations 22–32 each have one team qualify. Due to the ongoing English ban, their four berths were allocated to associations 9–12, each gaining a third berth. Association ranking For the 1986–87 UEFA Cup, the associations are allocated places according to their 1985 UEFA country coefficients, which takes into account their performance in European competitions from 1980–81 to 1984–85. +Association ranking for 1986–87 UEFA CupRankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes1ENG England41.0930Note ENG2ITA Italy38.80043FRG West Germany37.0704Soviet Union Soviet Union33.91635BEL Belgium33.2666SCO Scotland30.4007POR Portugal30.2508ESP Spain29.3669Yugoslavia Yugoslavia27.55010Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia23.55011FRA 1974 France22.75012East Germany East Germany22.60013AUT Austria22.500214NED Netherlands20.04915ROU 1965 Romania19.91616SUI Switzerland18.50017BUL 1971 Bulgaria17.250RankAssociationCoeff.TeamsNotes18SWE Sweden17.2502-WAL Wales17.0000Note WAL19GRE Greece16.916220HUN Hungary16.75021POL Poland14.75022DEN Denmark9.249123IRL Republic of Ireland6.33224ALB 1946 Albania6.00025NOR Norway5.99926TUR Turkey5.33327FIN Finland5.33128NIR Northern Ireland4.99829CYP 1960 Cyprus4.66530MLT Malta1.99931ISL Iceland1.99832LUX Luxembourg1.332 Note ENG England: Since the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985, all English football clubs were placed under an indefinite ban by Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) from all European competitions, which would be lifted in 1990–91. As England was first in the UEFA rankings, each of their four allocated UEFA Cup berths for 1986–87 were transferred as a third berth for associations 9–12, namely Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, France and East Germany. West Ham United, Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday would have qualified by league position, while Oxford United would have qualified by winning the 1985-86 League Cup. Note WAL Wales: There was no national league in Wales before 1992 and the only competition organised by the Football Association of Wales was the Welsh Cup so Wales had just a single participant in European competitions, the winner (or best placed Welsh team as several English teams also competed) of the Welsh Cup which competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Its virtual ranking is only an original research, because the UEFA country ranking was only used to allocate the UEFA Cup spots at time, so Wales was not included. Partizan elected to not replay their final game, and Red Star Belgrade was crowned champion instead, with Partizan qualifying for the UEFA Cup in 2nd place. After an appeal by Partizan, the Yugoslav Constitutional Court reversed the decision on 29 July 1987, reinstating Partizan as champions. Note AUT Austria: Wacker Innsbruck qualified for the UEFA Cup, but its licence in the Austrian Football Bundesliga was taken by FC Swarovski Tirol, as Wacker Innsbruck fell to the eighth division of Austrian football. While considered a new team, Swarovski Tirol retained the UEFA Cup placing. Schedule The schedule of the competition was as follows. Matches were scheduled for Wednesdays, though some matches exceptionally took place on Tuesdays or Thursdays. The semi-finals reverted to being played in the same days, and the two-legged final again had a two week interval. +Schedule for 1986–87 UEFA CupRoundFirst legSecond legFirst round16–18 September 198630 September – 2 October 1986Second round22–23 October 19864–5 November 1986Third round26 November 198610–17 December 1986Quarter-finals4 March 198718 March 1987Semi-finals8 April 198722 April 1987Final6 May 198720 May 1987 First round Sparta Prague TCH 2–3 Vitória de Guimarães POR 1–1 1–2 Fiorentina ITA 1–1 (1–3 p) Boavista POR 1–0 0–1 (a.e.t.)
