Background
After 1975, during the period of military rule, Bangladesh's education sector faced various challenges, such as declining standards, inequality, and allegations of not meeting the demands of the modern era. To provide new direction in education, the Ershad government formed a commission under the leadership of Abdul Majid Khan. The commission's purpose was to reorganize the education structure in line with the country's socio-economic realities, values, and development strategies.https://www.thedailystar.net/perspective/dissent-and-the-price-freedom-1312171 In 1983, during a protest rally by students against the education policy of Dr. Majid Khan eight people were killed 2016-11-22 The Daily Star 2025-07-09 enen Education Commissions of Bangladesh https://studypress.org/news/details/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%82%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B6%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%B6%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%B7%E0%A6%BE-%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B6%E0%A6%A8/522 dead https://web.archive.org/web/20221029050136/https://studypress.org/news/details/%E0%A6%AC%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%82%E0%A6%B2%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%A6%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B6%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%B0-%E0%A6%B6%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%95%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%B7%E0%A6%BE-%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%AE%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%B6%E0%A6%A8/522 2022-10-29 2022-10-10 studypress.org

Criticism
Right after the commission's recommendations and the proposed education policy were published, there were a variety of reactions from educationists, students, and teachers' organizations. Many felt that this policy risked increasing inequality, commercialization, and religious influence in education, which could go against public interest and communal harmony.https://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/bangladesh-others/53629/feb-14-the-day-of-resistance-against-autocracy "Feb 14: The day of resistance against autocracy" 14 February 2014 8 July 2025 Dhaka TribuneSuykens Bert 2018 "A Hundred Per Cent Good Man Cannot Do Politics": Violent Self‑Sacrifice, Student Authority, and Party‑State Integration in Bangladesh 883–916 Modern Asian Studies 52 3 In particular, the decisions to give priority to financial ability in higher education and to increase religious content were the most controversial.https://www.dhakatribune.com/bangladesh/bangladesh-others/53629/feb-14-the-day-of-resistance-against-autocracy Majid Khan education policy proposed the introduction of Arabic and English in the curriculum of the primary education 2011-02-14 Dhaka Tribune 2025-07-09 enhttps://www.tbsnews.net/bangladesh/obituary/former-education-minister-majeed-khan-passes-away-622782 Former education minister Majeed Khan passes away 2023-04-27 The Business Standard 2025-07-09 en
Legacy and evaluation
Although the Majid Khan Education Commission was a significant initiative in Bangladesh's history of education reform, its recommended policy faced intense protests and was suspended. Even so, many of the commission's observations and suggestions were considered in later education policy reforms and improvements. The experience of this commission set an example for the importance of democratic discussions in policy making, and for ensuring equality and inclusiveness in Bangladesh's education system.Bangladesher Shikkha Andolon Hasan Mahfuz 2018 Muktadharahttps://www.thedailystar.net/perspective/dissent-and-the-price-freedom-1312171 Dissent and the price of freedom 2016-11-22 The Daily Star 2025-07-09 en
