Northern California typically sees wildfire activity between late spring and early fall, peaking in the summer with hotter and drier conditions. Occasional cold frontal passages can bring wind and lightning. The timing of fire season in Southern California is similar, peaking between late spring and fall. The severity and duration of peak activity in either part of the state is modulated in part by weather events: downslope/offshore wind events can lead to critical fire weather, while onshore flow and Pacific weather systems can bring conditions that hamper wildfire growth.Weather: Fire Season Climatology (Northern California) https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California June 25, 2024 National Wildfire Coordinating Group April 25, 2024 May 13, 2021 https://web.archive.org/web/20210513095421/https://www.nwcg.gov/publications/pms437/weather/fire-season-climatology#TOC-Northern-California liveToohey Grace June 22, 2024 California wildfires have already burned 90,000 acres, and summer is just beginning https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year June 25, 2024 Los Angeles Times June 25, 2024 https://web.archive.org/web/20240625010426/https://www.latimes.com/environment/story/2024-06-22/spring-wildfire-sees-a-boom-concerning-for-rest-of-year live List of wildfires The following is a list of the wildfires that burned more than 1,000 acres (400 hectares), produced significant structural damage or casualties, or were otherwise notable. These lines are artificial barriers, like trenches or cleared vegetation, designed to stop the fire's spread, or natural barriers like rivers. Containment reflects progress in managing the fire but does not necessarily mean the fire is starved of fuel, under control, or put out.KCAL-TV Los Angeles What containment and other wildfire related terms mean September 12, 2024 https://www.cbsnews.com/losangeles/news/what-does-containment-mean-wildfire-evacuation-warning-order-red-flag/ 2025-07-25 NotesBannerSan Diego5,320 acres km2 1 tablecen May 24, 2012 May 29, 2012 GeorgeTulare1,707 acres km2 1 tablecen June 1, 2012 June 15, 2012 GainesMariposa1,700 acres km2 1 tablecen June 12, 2012 June 14, 2012 HighlandRiverside2,171 acres km2 1 tablecen June 16, 2012 June 18, 2012 CascadeMariposa1,705 acres km2 1 tablecen June 16, 2012 November 26, 2012 DaleShasta1,083 acres km2 1 tablecen July 5, 2012 July 7, 2012 2 structures destroyed FishInyo1,103 acres km2 1 tablecen July 7, 2012 July 9, 2012 MillColusa29,502 acres km2 1 tablecen July 7, 2012 July 18, 2012 5 structures destroyed GrapevineColusa1,870 acres km2 1 tablecen July 8, 2012 July 12, 2012 RailColusa1,870 acres km2 1 tablecen July 9, 2012 July 12, 2012 TurkeyMonterey2,529 acres km2 1 tablecen July 9, 2012 July 20, 2012 RobbersPlacer2,650 acres km2 1 tablecen July 11, 2012 July 21, 2012 8 structures destroyed FlatTrinity1,688 acres km2 1 tablecen July 11, 2012 July 17, 2012 SandKern1,428 acres km2 1 tablecen July 14, 2012 July 19, 2012 1 structure destroyed SpanishLassen1,169 acres km2 1 tablecen July 18, 2012 July 21, 2012 ReadingShasta28,079 acres km2 1 tablecen July 23, 2012 August 21, 2012 ChipsPlumas75,217 acres km2 1 tablecen July 29, 2012 August 31, 2012 9 structures destroyed RushmoreRiverside1,000 acres km2 1 tablecen August 4, 2012 August 4, 2012 Piute ComlexKern1,783 acres km2 1 tablecen August 4, 2012 August 11, 2012 Lake ComplexModoc1,668 acres km2 1 tablecen August 5, 2012 August 9, 2012 Fort ComplexSiskiyou23,653 acres km2 1 tablecen August 5, 2012 September 10, 2012 Barry PointModoc38,394 acres km2 1 tablecen August 6, 2012 August 28, 2012 3 structures destroyed IndianMono12,574 acres km2 1 tablecen August 8, 2012 August 15, 2012 ChihuahuaSan Diego2,006 acres km2 1 tablecen August 9, 2012 August 12, 2012 Jawbone ComplexKern1,218 acres km2 1 tablecen August 10, 2012 August 22, 2012 19 structures destroyed RamseyCalaveras1,137 acres km2 1 tablecen August 11, 2012 August 31, 2012 WyeLake2,934 acres km2 1 tablecen August 12, 2012 August 18, 2012 3 structures destroyed WalkerLake5,000 acres km2 1 tablecen August 12, 2012 August 14, 2012 RushLassen271,911 acres km2 1 tablecen August 12, 2012 August 31, 2012 Vallecito Lightning ComplexSan Diego22,829 acres km2 1 tablecen August 13, 2012 August 20, 2012 MillTehama1,641 acres km2 1 tablecen August 13, 2012 August 23, 2012 BuckRiverside2,681 acres km2 1 tablecen August 14, 2012 August 18, 2012 4 structures destroyed NelsonModoc3,661 acres km2 1 tablecen August 17, 2012 August 21, 2012 PonderosaTehama27,676 acres km2 1 tablecen August 18, 2012 September 2, 2012 133 structures destroyed Bagley ComplexShasta1,000 acres km2 1 tablecen August 18, 2012 August 22, 2012 North PassMendocino41,983 acres km2 1 tablecen August 18, 2012 September 16, 2012 26 structures destroyed BagleyShasta46,011 acres km2 1 tablecen August 18, 2012 September 15, 2012 WilliamsLos Angeles4,192 acres km2 1 tablecen September 2, 2012 September 11, 2012 Sixteen ComplexColusa19,000 acres km2 1 tablecen September 4, 2012 September 11, 2012 StaffordTrinity4,407 acres km2 1 tablecen September 5, 2012 September 13, 2012 LikelyLassen9,838 acres km2 1 tablecen September 5, 2012 September 14, 2012 ScottsLake4,517 acres km2 1 tablecen September 7, 2012 September 14, 2012 ShockeySan Diego2,555 acres km2 1 tablecen September 23, 2012 September 27, 2012 39 structures destroyed Notes References California, 2012 Category:Wildfires in California by year
