The team was coached by second-year head coach Mike Leach and played their home games at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington. They were members of the North Division of the Pac-12 Conference. They finished the season 6–7, 4–5 in Pac-12 play to finish in a tie for fourth place in the North Division. Washington State became bowl eligible for the first time since the 2006 season, when they went 6–6. As the seventh-place team in the Pac-12 conference, the Cougars were selected for their first bowl game since 2003. They played the Colorado State Rams in the New Mexico Bowl on December 21, 2013, losing by the score of 48–45. The game was noted for an egregious error by head coach Mike Leach, who instead of electing to kneel down the ball three times when the Rams were out of time outs, instead ran a play which resulted in a turnover. This allowed Colorado State to tie the game and ultimately win on a last-second field goal.Litman Laken Trick play keys Colorado State's miracle comeback in New Mexico Bowl For The Win USA Today 2013-12-21 https://ftw.usatoday.com/2013/12/trick-play-colorado-state-comeback-washington-state-new-mexico-bowl 2024-11-24 Schedule 2013 AP Pacific August 31 4:00 pm l y y Auburn Jordan–Hare Stadium Auburn, AL ESPNU 24–31 85,095 September 7 7:30 pm w y USC 25 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Los Angeles, CA FS1 10–7 77,823 September 14 3:30 pm w y Southern Utah Martin Stadium Pullman, WA P12N 48–10 31,127 September 21 7:30 pm w y y Idaho Martin Stadium Pullman, WA Battle of the Palouse P12N 42–0 31,521 September 28 7:00 pm l y Stanford 5 CenturyLink Field Seattle, WA ESPN 17–55 40,095 October 5 1:00 pm w y California California Memorial Stadium Berkeley, CA FS1 44–22 44,682 October 12 7:30 pm l Oregon State Martin Stadium Pullman, WA ESPNU 24–52 31,955 October 19 7:00 pm l y Oregon 2 Autzen Stadium Eugene, OR FS1 38–62 56,949 October 31, 2013 7:30 pm l Arizona State 25 Martin Stadium Pullman, WA ESPN 21–55 20,617 November 16 11:00 am w y Arizona Arizona Stadium Tucson, AZ P12N 24–17 42,080 November 23 12:30 pm w Utah Martin Stadium Pullman, WA P12N 49–37 23,112 November 29, 2013 12:30 pm l y Washington Husky Stadium Seattle, WA Fox Apple Cup 17–27 71,753 December 21 11:00 am l y y Colorado State University Stadium Albuquerque, NM New Mexico Bowl ESPN 45–48 27,104 Game summaries At Auburn 2013 Auburn Tigers football team Washington State Cougars white; text-align:center collapsed Washington State Cougars at Auburn Tigers – Game summary August 31 4:00 p.m. PDT / 6:00 p.m. CDT Cougars 7 14 3 0 Tigers 8 17 3 3 Jordan–Hare Stadium, Auburn, Alabama 85,095 Hot and muggy, 84 F C Hubert Owens ESPNU Clay Matvick, Matt Stinchcomb, and Dawn Davenport Box score, Recap First quarter WSU – Jeremy Laufasa 4-yard run (Andrew Furney kick), 10:43.
