The Flyers qualified for the playoffs, but lost in the first round. Off-season In the off-season, the Flyers re-vamped their lineup by signing star center Jeremy Roenick and veteran defenseman Eric Weinrich. On August 20, 2001, they finally traded Eric Lindros to the New York Rangers for Kim Johnsson, Jan Hlavac, Pavel Brendl and a 2003 third-round draft pick. The Rangers would also receive a 2003 first-round draft pick if Lindros suffered a concussion in the pre-season or the first 50 games of the regular season and didn't return to action for at least 12 months.https://news.google.com/newspapers?id=PokNAAAAIBAJ&sjid=dXADAAAAIBAJ&pg=4776,148974&dq=eric+lindros&hl=en Lindros refreshes Rangers' file Associated Press August 21, 2001 July 16, 2013http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/20010820_trade.asp https://web.archive.org/web/20011031142157/http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/20010820_trade.asp FLYERS ACQUIRE PAVEL BRENDL, JAN HLAVAC AND KIM JOHNSSON FROM NY RANGERS FOR ERIC LINDROS Philadelphia Flyers August 20, 2001 October 31, 2001 January 2, 2014 Pre-season On September 20, 2001, in the middle of a 2–2 game between the Flyers and New York Rangers, the game was stopped. A message from United States President George W. Bush about the 9/11 attacks was broadcast on the arena video screen. After the message, the game did not resume and it was declared a 2–2 tie at the end of the 2nd period. Both teams took place in a handshake line following the game, a tradition normally reserved for the end of an elimination game in a Stanley Cup Playoff series.Hockey's Book of Firsts, p.71, James Duplacey, JG Press, 978-1-57215-037-9 Regular season The Flyers began 2001–02 with high expectations and with Roenick leading the team in scoring the Flyers finished with an Atlantic Division title. Eric Desjardins stepped down as team captain eight games into the season and was replaced by Keith Primeau.Flyers Name Keith Primeau Captain http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/21.asp Philadelphia Flyers June 4, 2022 https://web.archive.org/web/20011213172220/http://www.philadelphiaflyers.com/pressbox/archive/21.asp December 13, 2001 October 23, 2001 Lindros returned to Philly on January 12, a game which the Flyers took 4–2 in a brutal battle and saw Lindros held scoreless. Lindros did exact a measure of revenge, finishing off a hat trick within the first 22 minutes of a March 2 game at Madison Square Garden. Simon Gagne also scored three times but the Rangers held on for a 6–5 win. The power play was one of the NHL's worst however and after their top two centermen, Jeremy Roenick and Primeau, suffered injuries the night before the trade deadline,http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/games2/2002-03-18-phi-tb.htm USATODAY.com – Roenick, Primeau hurt in Flyers' tie USA TODAY Associated Press March 19, 2002 April 11, 2013 the Flyers acquired Adam Oates from the Washington Capitals. While Oates was the third leading point-producer in the league at the time, the price to acquire him was high. The Flyers parted with top goalie prospect Maxime Ouellet and their first, second, and third-round draft picks in the 2002 NHL entry draft. Season standings PHI PHI Playoffs The Flyers set a record for fewest goals scored by a team in a five-game playoff series, scoring only two goals against the Ottawa Senators. It turned out there was much discontent in the locker room, resulting in Bill Barber and his coaching staff being fired.http://articles.philly.com/2002-05-01/sports/25347416_1_ed-snider-jack-adams-award-flyers-coach https://web.archive.org/web/20141220091009/http://articles.philly.com/2002-05-01/sports/25347416_1_ed-snider-jack-adams-award-flyers-coach dead December 20, 2014 Ax Falls On Barber The Philadelphia Inquirer Tim Panaccio May 1, 2002 December 8, 2014 Schedule and results Preseason background:#fff; border-top:#ff642a 5px solid; border-bottom:#000 5px solid; 2001 preseasonhttp://a.espncdn.com/nhl/tc2001/s/flyers.html Flyers: Spotlight shifts from Lindros to Roenick ESPN.com Rob Parent September 7, 2001 May 24, 2016 y background:#fff; border-top:#ff642a 2px solid; border-bottom:#000 2px solid; Preseason: 4–1–3 (home: 2–0–3; road: 2–1–0) Game Date Score Opponent Record Recap |- style="background:#ccc;" | –Note1 a a || September 15 || || align="left"| @ Washington Capitals || colspan="2" | |- | 1 || September 18 || 6–1 || align="left"| @ Washington Capitals || 1–0–0 || WPhiladelphia 6, Washington 1 https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/18/Philadelphia-6-Washington-1/2251000785600/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 18, 2001 |- | 2 || September 20 || 2–2Note2 b b || align="left"| New York Rangers || 1–0–1 || TNY Rangers 2, Philadelphia 2 (2 periods) https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/20/NY-Rangers-2-Philadelphia-2-2-periods/3311000958400/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 20, 2001 |- | 3Note3 c c || September 21 || 5–5 OT || align="left"| New York Islanders || 1–0–2 || TPhiladelphia 5, NY Islanders 5 (OT) https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/21/Philadelphia-5-NY-Islanders-5-OT/6851001044800/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 21, 2001 |- | 4 || September 22 || 2–2 OT || align="left"| New Jersey Devils || 1–0–3 || TPhiladelphia 2, New Jersey 2 (OT) https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/22/Philadelphia-2-New-Jersey-2-OT/9331001131200/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 22, 2001 |- | 5 || September 23 || 1–2 || align="left"| @ New York Rangers || 1–1–3 || LNY Rangers 2, Philadelphia 1 https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/23/NY-Rangers-2-Philadelphia-1/6651001217600/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 23, 2001 |- | 6 || September 25 || 6–4 || align="left"| Washington Capitals || 2–1–3 || WPhiladelphia 6, Washington 4 https://www.upi.com/Archives/2001/09/25/Philadelphia-6-Washington-4/6231001390400/ UPI August 18, 2022 September 25, 2001 |- | 7 || September 28 || 5–2 || align="left"| New York Islanders || 3–1–3 || WGrossman Evan ISLES’ PICK IS OSGOOD AS IT GETS https://nypost.com/2001/09/29/isles-pick-is-osgood-as-it-gets/ New York Post August 18, 2022 September 29, 2001 |- | 8 || September 29 || 5–4 || align="left"| @ New Jersey Devils || 4–1–3 || WEverson Mark INJURIES HOBBLE DEVILS https://nypost.com/2001/09/30/injuries-hobble-devils/ New York Post August 18, 2022 September 30, 2001 |- | colspan="6" style="text-align:center;"| Notes: Note1 a a Game rescheduled to September 18 due to the September 11 attacks.
