It was contested by Dundalk and Galway Rovers, and took place across two legs – with the first leg being played on 1 January 1981 at Terryland Park in Galway, and the second leg being played on 8 January 1981 at Oriel Park in Dundalk. Both legs finished scoreless and Dundalk subsequently won a penalty shoot-out to win the trophy for a second time. Background The League Cup was the first trophy of the 1980–81 League of Ireland season. The two sides had met once previously that season in the League in a 1–1 draw.FIXTURES FOR 1980-1981 LEAGUE OF IRELAND PREMIER DIVISION https://www.extratime.ie/competition/100/81/ www.extratime.ie 22 November 2019 Dundalk had last won the competition in 1978 – their first win in the competition. Galway elected to continue with the injured player in goals, and Dundalk subsequently failed to seriously challenge him, particularly as they then lost forward Mick Fairclough to injury a minute later.Faiers David Lally Galway Hero https://archive.irishnewsarchive.com/Olive/APA/INA/SharedView.Article.aspx?href=IND%2F1981%2F01%2F02&id=Ar00922&sk=83189E51 22 November 2019 Irish Independent 2 January 1981 Prior to that, Dundalk had dominated the first half and hit the post through Jerome Clarke just before half-time. But, despite the injury to Lally, they appeared happy to settle for the draw, which made them favourites going into the second leg. The second leg in Oriel Park saw Dundalk dominate again as expected, with the Galway goalmouth being described as "resembling a very crowded Eyre Square".Dunne Noel League Cup https://archive.irishnewsarchive.com/Olive/APA/INA/SharedView.Article.aspx?href=IND%2F1981%2F01%2F09&id=Ar01202&sk=7A341FDE 22 November 2019 Irish Independent 9 January 1981 Goalkeeper Lally, recovered from his injury the week before, had to make a number of saves to keep Dundalk out. His opposite number, Richie Blackmore, meanwhile, had little to do – as Galway's players were forced into defending on the edge of their own penalty area. In extra-time Dundalk continued to dominate possession, but could only fashion one chance, which again was saved by Lally. In the subsequent penalty shoot-out Dundalk missed two of their five penalties, while Galway missed two of their first four, leaving Lally to take their final kick to send the shoot-out to sudden-death. His penalty was saved by Blackmore, and Dundalk had won the League of Ireland Cup for the second time.https://archive.irishnewsarchive.com/Olive/APA/INA/SharedView.Article.aspx?href=CTT%2F1981%2F01%2F09&id=Ar00110&sk=E8EDE750 Heartbreak for Rovers in Dundalk Brendan Carroll Connacht Tribune 9 January 1981 30 April 2019 Irish Newspaper Archives They would go on to win the FAI Cup as well, later that season.https://archive.irishnewsarchive.com/Olive/APA/INA/SharedView.Article.aspx?href=IND%2F1981%2F04%2F27&id=Ar01305&sk=603CF7A4 Decisive dundalk Noel Dunne Irish Independent 27 April 1981 23 April 2019 Irish Newspaper Archives First leg details 1 January 1981 15:00 Galway Rovers 0–0Ireland League Cup (1973-2006) https://www.rsssf.org/tablesi/ierleagcuphistfull.html RSSSF 21 October 2019 Dundalk Terryland Park £4,000 gate Kevin O'Sullivan Report _whiteborder _vneckwhite _whiteborder _3_stripes_darkred B03060 B03060 B03060 FFFFFF FFFFFF Galway Rovers _blackborder _collarwhite _blackborder _3_stripes_black FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF 000000 FFFFFF Dundalk GK IRL Tom LallyDF IRL Gerry DalyDF IRL Martin SheehanDF IRL John HerrickDF IRL James CollinsMF IRL Michael NolanMF IRL Fergus McDonnellMF IRL Kevin Cassidy 90MF IRL George Quinlivan FW IRL Carl Humphries FW IRL Michael McLoughlin Substitutes:MF IRL Philip Fay 90Manager:IRL John Herrick GK ENG Richie BlackmoreRB IRL Vincent McKennaCB IRL Tommy McConvilleCB IRL Paddy DunningLB IRL Martin Lawlor RM IRL Jerome ClarkeCM IRL Leo FlanaganCM NZL Sean ByrneLM IRL Synan BraddishFW IRL Mick Fairclough 53FW IRL Willie Crawley 83Substitutes:FW IRL John Archbold 83MF IRL Brian Duff 53Manager:NIR Jim McLaughlin Second leg details 8 January 1981 20:00 Galway Rovers 0–0 yes Dundalk Jerome Clarke Leo Flanagan Vincent McKenna Synan Braddish Paddy Dunning 3–2 Carl Humphries John Herrick George Quinlivan Fergus McDonnell Tom Lally Oriel Park unreported Paddy Mulhall Report _blackborder _collarwhite _blackborder _3_stripes_black FFFFFF FFFFFF FFFFFF 000000 FFFFFF Dundalk _whiteborder _vneckwhite _whiteborder _3_stripes_maroon B03060 B03060 B03060 FFFFFF FFFFFF Galway Rovers GK ENG Richie BlackmoreRB IRL Tommy McConvilleCB IRL Dermot KeelyCB IRL Paddy DunningLB IRL Martin Lawlor RM IRL Jerome ClarkeCM IRL Leo FlanaganCM IRL Vincent McKennaLM IRL John Archbold 83FW IRL Mick FaircloughFW NZL Sean Byrne 59Substitutes:FW IRL Willie Crawley 59MF IRL Synan Braddish 83Manager:NIR Jim McLaughlin GK IRL Tom LallyDF IRL Gerry DalyDF IRL Martin SheehanDF IRL John HerrickDF IRL James CollinsMF IRL Michael NolanMF IRL Fergus McDonnellMF IRL Kevin Cassidy 101MF IRL Philip Fay 86FW IRL Carl Humphries FW IRL Michael McLoughlin Substitutes:MF IRL Tony Mannion 86MF IRL George Quinlivan 101Manager:IRL John Herrick References Bibliography Jim Murphy The History of Dundalk F.C.: The First 100 Years Dundalgan Press 2003 B0042SO3R2 MacSweeney Niall A Record of League of Ireland Football 1921/2 - 1984/5 Association of Football Statisticians 1985 B008H2CBJQ Graham Alex Football in the Republic of Ireland a Statistical Record 1921–2005 Soccer Books Limited 1-86223-135-4 Citations Category:League of Ireland Cup finals League Of Ireland Cup Final 1981 League Of Ireland Cup Final 1981 League Of Ireland Cup Final Category:1980–81 in Republic of Ireland association football Category:Association football in Galway (city) Category:Sport in Dundalk Category:Association football in County Louth
