Season summary Back in the top flight after a five-year exile, Jim Smith's Derby County side never looked in any real danger of an immediate return to Division One, and their 12th-place finish in the final table was their highest final position in eight years. Young striker Dean Sturridge received many plaudits for his goalscoring exploits, which sparked talk of a £7 million transfer to Arsenal, but the move never happened. The highlight of the season was a 3–2 win against champions Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Paulo Wanchope scoring a "wonder goal" on his English league debut.https://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/football-wanchopes-wierd-route-to-renaissance-man-1287166.html https://ghostarchive.org/archive/20220501/https://www.independent.co.uk/news/education/education-news/football-wanchopes-wierd-route-to-renaissance-man-1287166.html 1 May 2022 subscription Harris Nick Football: Wanchope's weird route to renaissance man The Independent 6 December 1997 8 July 2010https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/wanchope-put-on-transfer-list-6349836.html https://archive.today/20120913024835/http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport/article-1082884-wanchope-put-on-transfer-list.do live 13 September 2012 Wanchope put on transfer list Evening Standard 29 January 2001 8 July 2010 Final league table 1996–97 FA Premier League DER Results summary 8 6 5 25 22 3 7 9 20 36 Statto September 2015 Results by round table b Round Ground H/A/A/H/A/H/A/H/H/A/A/H/H/A/H/A/H/A/A/H/A/A/A/H/H/H/A/H/A/A/H/A/H/H/A/H/A/H Result D/D/L/D/W/W/D/L/L/D/L/W/W/D/W/D/L/L/L/D/D/L/D/L/W/D/L/W/L/L/W/W/D/W/L/D/W/L Position 7/13/15/16/12/9/9/11/13/12/16/11/10/11/9/11/11/11/12/11/13/15/16/16/13/12/13/12/14/14/14/12/12/11/12/11/10/12 Home Away green2 Win yellow2 Draw red2 Loss 1st 2nd 3rd red1 Statto.com September 2015 Results Derby County's score comes firsthttp://www.statto.com/football/teams/derby-county/1996-1997/results Derby County results for the 1996-1997 season -
